CANADIAN FOOTBALL
TORONTO ARGOS WIN GREY CUP IN OVERTIME
The Toronto Argonauts defeated Winnipeg 17-14 on an overtime field goal to win the Grey Cup, emblematic of football supremacy north of the border. The Argos led 7-0 at the half but Winnipeg tied the game in the third quarter and then took a 14-7 lead early in the fourth. The Argos tied things a few minutes later to send the game into extra time.

It marks the second year in a row the Argos beat Winnipeg to win the Cup. Last year Toronto won in convincing fashion, scoring a 35-0 shutout. This year's game in Toronto was much closer but it still marks the Bombers 4th Grey Cup defeat in the last 5 years. Winnipeg last won the Grey Cup in 1941 when the Bombers trimmed the Ottawa Rough Riders 18-16.

GOLF
BYRON NELSON NAMED TSN GOLFER OF THE YEAR
To no one's surprise Byron Nelson has been named the golfer of the year by TigerFan's Sporting News. The Fort Worth, Texas native won two majors to bring his career total to 6. It did not quite compare statistically to the run he had in 1945 when he won 11 consecutive tournaments and a total of 19 tour events. The performance has been disparaged by some because most of the other top professional golfers were serving in World War II. (Nelson wasn't qualified for military service because he had hemophilia.) His win in the British Open and the PGA Championship certainly goes a long way towards erasing some of that doubt.

The British Open win became a marathon as Nelson and Australian Peter Thomson needed just an extra round to break their tie but also 5 sudden-death playoff holes. Nelson birdied the 5th playoff hole to claim the Claret Jug for the first time in his career. He won the match-play PGA title at the Portland Golf Club by beating Dick Burton 2 and 1 in the final. His toughest match came in the quarterfinals when he needed an extra hole to top Jimmy Demaret. Nelson finished tied for 5th in the Masters 5 strokes behind winner Ben Hogan. He missed the cut for the US Open.

In other golf notes captains Ben Hogan and Henry Cotton are expected to name their rosters for the 1947 Ryder Cup which will be held at the Portland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon. It will be the first Cup challenge since the Americans upset the British on their home turf in 1937. In the five events prior to that the home side had won on each occassion. The first event was held in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1927 after a trophy was donated by Samuel Ryder. The United States leads the series 4 wins to two. The event will return to the prewar format of being contested every second year. The 1949 event will be held at the Ganton Golf Club in Ganton, England.
