Jamie Preiss: Worth Every Penny

When the Hogs announced the signing of ace reliever Jamie Preiss for 4.25 per year for 4 years the reaction around the baseball world was unianimous. The CBL Anaylst, an sabermetric organization, wrote in their newsletter, "Here we thought some organization would be applying some logic to the way that they ran their baseball operations and then the Carolina Hogs go do this. It was understandable when they overpayed to get Eddie Stites and Antonio Rivas but the Preiss signing was inexcusable. This was just another example of a team trying to hard to make a big splash. The biggest waste of money a bad team can make is on an elite closer, and Priess has barely been that for Buffalo posting a 3.82 and losing 8 games last year. The move doesnt make sense and we have lost a lot of confidence in the Carolina organization."

Oops.

Priess has proven all of his doubters wrong thus far. He has been far more than anyone, including Carolina could have imagined. His numbers are so unreal that they dont quite make sense. 1st amoung relivers in era, 1st amoung relivers in opponents batting average, a 93% save success rate, only 13.6% Inherited Runners scored when Jamie entered the game. He has just 13 saves, but 4 holds and 3 wins. He's pitched 50 innings already. Some of his individual game lines are even better. Take his last win where he pitched 3.2 hit less innings striking out 8, including the first seven batters he faced. Priess has been used in an unconventional way by manager Melvin Young and he has responded in fine form. Other pitchers might balk at the fact that his setup men, Arthur Ruddy and Lawrence McKinnon have 7 saves between them, but not Jamie. Maybe its because he's already hit paydirt but he doesnt seem concerned with numbers. Just winning. "Look, saves are overrated," said Jamie in a recent interview, "I just want to get the job done and help my team win. I dont want them to save me for the times when we have a three run lead in the ninth. I want them to feel like they can use me when the game is on the line. Otherwise I'm not the best pitcher on the staff, and thats what I care about. That and winning." While Jamie has been lights out all year, this past month he was simply untouchable. He went 2-0 with 4 saves, an 0.42 era and 29k's in 21.2 innings.
