I say yes, but you would have to understand my definition of athlete.
Just know that I think someone can be an athlete, but not athletic and vice versa.
In my opinion:
Athlete equals skill
Athletic equals body
For example:
Big Man A is a great athlete, but doesn't have the body to compete in the league. He isn't athletic.
Big Man B is extremely athletic. He has a great league body, can take some pounding, but he lacks good overall skills. He isn't an athlete.
I know most (maybe some, depends because I really don't know) would say that an athlete is just the same as being athletic. But, again, if you understand my perspective than you can see why I think a race car driver is an athlete.
You don't have to be athletic to be a great athlete.
