BASEBALL AWARDS
WILLIAMS NAMED AMERICAN LEAGUE MVP
27 year old Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox was named the American League's Most Valuable Player. It marks the first player of the year award for Williams, who also collected his first gold glove, following a splendid 1946 campaign.
Williams finished third in the American League in batting with a .322 average. He led the league in homers with 31 and was second in rbi's with 91. The American League rookie of the year in 1939, Williams has made the allstar team in each of his 8 major league seasons. He came very close to winning the MVP on a couple of earlier occassions but was always just outperformed by the now-retired Jimmie Foxx.
REISER NAMED NATIONAL LEAGUE MVP
Pete Reiser became just the fourth Brooklyn Dodger to be named National League MVP. Reiser led the National League with 95 rbi's and his .314 batting average was good for fourth place in the league. It was just the third season as an everyday player for the 27 year old outfielder. Reiser joins Babe Herman (1934), Zach Wheat (1916, 1920) and Joe Kelley (1905) as the only Brooklyn players to win the MVP award.
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEK 11
RAIDERS SURPRISE CHIEFS IN AFC WEST
Don't count the Oakland Raiders out of the playoff hunt yet. Despite a 3-6 record entering their week 11 game the Raiders were 11th best in the NFL according to the league power rankings. They looked like the much better club on the field in Kansas City after a 27-17 win over the hometown Chiefs. The Oakland defense finally played up to it's capabilities and produced 6 turnovers that led to all but 3 of the Raider points. Johnny Cushing ran for just 90 yards and Oakland QB Antwan Baker completed just 15 of 30 passes for 154 yards but the Raiders offense did just what it had to do - not turn the ball over. In their 4 wins the offense turned the ball over just twice but in their 6 losses they have a -10 turnover ratio.
The Raiders still have their work cut out for them if they are to make the playoffs for the 4th time in 6 years but they are still in the hunt.
BRONCOS NEED OVERTIME TO STOP CHARGERS
The Denver Broncos scored the final 20 points of the game, including a 10 yard touchdown run from fullback Donald Rice in overtime, to rally past San Diego 23-17. The victory gives the 8-2 Broncos a 2-game lead over the Chargers atop the AFC West. Denver is also the only 8 win team in the AFC.
Denver QB Jay Cason threw for 351 yards despited being sacked 6 times, inclduing 3 by Chargers DE Reggie White.
In other AFC action
Mario Glenn ran for 82 yards and 1 touchdown plus he added 41 yards and a touchdown receiving to lead New England past Miami 20-10.
The Jets moved into second place in the East with a 20-7 over visiting Buffalo. All the scoring came in the first half including a pair of Keith Reeves touchdown passes for the Jets. Steve *Van Buren caught a 12 yard pass for a score and added 91 yards rushing.
Indianapolis beat Jacksonville 31-24. Issac Burke threw 3 touchdown passes for the Colts who are now tied with the Jags for second in the South Division with 4-6 records.
Derek Mason ran for 105 yards and a touchdown to lead Tennessee past Houston 21-9. The Titans lead the South Division with a 7-3 record. Veteran safety Cris Brezina had 2 interceptions to give him 35 in his 6 year career.
SEAHAWKS BEHIND MOTLEY CRUISE BY 49ERS
Rookie Marion *Motley finally had a game that made him look like a top 10 draft pick should. Motley ran for 78 yards and gained another 41 yards receiving to lead Seattle past San Francisco 20-3. The touchdown was the first of his career and the 78 yards was his best output of the season. The Seattle win tightens up the NFC West as the 5-5 Seahawks trail the 49ers and Arizona by 1 game.
The St Louis Rams did their part to contribute to the logjam in the west by beating the Cardinals 20-17. St Louis opened a quick 14-0 lead on a pair of Rod Dugans touchdown passes and then hung on for the win. Safety Booker Hasselbeck had another huge game for the Cards, recording 11 tackles and 1 interception.
Elsewhere
Atlanta beat Tampa 23-13 to move to 5-5 and into a tie for top spot in the NFC South. New Orleans is also 5-5 and the co-leader after losing to Carolina 30-15. Panthers QB Javon Jamieson threw 2 fourth quarter touchdown strikes to give his club their 4th win.
Philadelphia handed the New York Giants their 8th straight loss in a 48-17 blowout. Eagles star RB Harley Mitchell gained 98 yards rushing in the first half before leaving with an elbow injury that may sideline him for a couple of weeks. Backup Jimmy Berton filled in exceptionally well, gaining a career high 120 yards on the ground.
Billy Campbell threw for 302 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Detroit beat Green Bay 20-13.
The Chicago Bears improved to 10-0 with a 35-25 win at home over Minnesota. The Vikings actually led the game 25-13 early in the 4th quarter before FB Seth Hall scored two Chicago touchdowns and RB George *McAfee added a third.

RIVALRY GAMES NEXT WEEK
A number of traditional rivals will square off next week but in many cases the game will mean far less than it normally does. For example the final week of the PCC and Western schedules usually means UCLA-USC and Michigan-Ohio State with Rose Bowl berths on the line. Not this year as both Michigan and UCLA enter the grudge match against their rivals having already clinched a conference title.
There are still some games next week that have a lot of importance attached to them. For example Duke at North Carolina means everything to the Tar Heels. A win will give them the Southern Conference title and likely a berth in the Oil Bowl. A Duke win would improve the Blue Devils to 6-3 and might be enough to get them into one of the lesser bowl games.
Oklahoma needs a win over Nebraska to clinch the Big 6 Title. A Cornhuskers victory and we could have a 3 way tie with those two schools and Kansas.
In the SEC there are still a couple of weeks left in the season. Tennessee needs to beat Kentucky this week to remain tied with Georgia at 4-0. The Bulldogs then finish the conference schedule against Georgia Tech while the Vols play Vanderbilt.
In the Southwest Conference Rice is in the driver's seat after a beating A&M 3-2 in a defensive struggle. The 3-0-1 Owls have games remaining with TCU and Baylor while 4-1 Texas A&M finishes up with Texas. The Longhorns are a dissappointing 1-3-1 in conference play.
Full conference standings and a much clearer bowl picture will appear in next week's issue.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
BLACK HAWKS STRUGGLES GETTING WORSE
The Chicago Black Hawks losing streak reached 7 games as the Hawks beaten 3 times this week. In 2 of the games the Black Hawks were on the wrong end of embarrassing blowouts. Wednesday night Rene Trudell and Tony Leswick each notched hat tricks as New York bombed the Black Hawks 9-2 at the Chicago Stadium. The next night the Black Hawks dropped an 8-2 decision in Montreal. Maurice Richard had 4 points in the game as the Hawks had to pull starting goaltender Paul Bibeault for the second straight night. It was not quite as bad at home Sunday but the result was the same as Chicago lost 4-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Black Hawks problem has been twofold. Goaltending has been terrible as neither ex-Canadien Paul Bibeault (3.97 gaa) or rookie Emile Francis (6.05) has been able to stop anything smaller than a beach ball. Just as troubling has been the offense as the Hawks have scored just 15 goals in 8 games. Max Bentley has been on fire with 6 goals and 8 assists but aside from him and linemate George Gee (8 points) there has been next to no offensive production.
Offense has not been an issue in Montreal where the first place Canadiens lead the league with 38 goals and have 5 of the top 12 point getters in the league including Maurice Richard who's 12 goals are just 3 shy of the entire Black Hawks team output. After beating Chicago on Thursday, the Habs trimmed Boston 4-3 Saturday before suffering their first loss of the season - 6-3 in Detroit. The Red Wings are second, 2 points back of the Canadiens, after winning both of their games last week.
BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
BOMBERS AND STAGS OFF TO 4-0 START
The St Louis Bombers and Chicago Stags are off to quick starts in the new BAA. The West Division co-leaders each sit at 4-0 and along with Philadelphia (1-0) are the only unbeaten teams remaining as the league completes it's second weekend of play. Guard Max Zaslofsky is averaging 15.5 points a game to lead the Stags powerful offense. Johnny Logan and Belus Smawley are each averaging 13.8 for the Bombers, who's success has been due to relentless defense. St Louis handed Washington it's first loss of the season by holding the Capitols to 50 points. Washington had average 77 points a game in it's 3 victories.
Joe Fulks of Philadelphia is the early scoring sensation. The Warriors have played just one game but Fulks became the first player to top the 20 point mark when he poured in 26 against Pittsburgh. Since then Don Carlson of Chicago picked up 22 points against Toronto.
