ARMY BEATS NOTRE DAME 16-7
COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
Army retakes the number one spot in the college football pool with a 16-7 victory over Notre Dame in what was billed 'The College Football Game of the Year'. Notre Dame struck early when junior quaterback Johnny *Lujack marched the Irish down the field midway through the first quarter. With a second and goal on the Army 4 yard line Lujack rolled out and seeing no one open tucked the ball under his arm and beat 3 Army defenders to the corner of the endzone. Army tied the score early in the second quarter when QB Arnold *Tucker connected with senior wide receiver Barney *Poole on a 12 yard touchdown strike. It remained tied at the half.

Army wore down the Notre Dame defense with a punishing ground game. While the Irish never did break the defense did bend enough to allow Army to connect on three second half field goals to make the final score 16-7. The key player for Army had to be offensive tackle Albert *Nemetz who opened up holes for running back Glen *Davis and QB Tucker all day. Tucker more than made up for injured fullback Doc *Blanchard, gaining 87 yards on the ground. Davis added 84 yards rushing to the Army offense.

NFL WEEK 10 RECAP
CHICAGO STILL UNBEATEN BUT JUST "BEARLY"
For the second week in a row the Chicago Bears flirted with defeat but in the end managed to keep their unbeaten record intact. Sid *Luckman's fourth touchdown pass of the day, a 5 yard strike to Robert Feeley with 1:19 remaining in regulation gave the Bears a 38-37 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Last week the Bears needed a late td pass from the same Luckman to Feeley combination in order to nip Detroit 23-21. Feeley made 7 receptions including 2 for touchdowns while the other wideout Ken *Kavanaugh was the recepient of 2 Luckman td passes as well.

Defense was a bad word in this game as the two quarterbacks combined for 651 yards passing and 8 touchdown passes. Cecil *Isbell of the Packers threw 4 touchdown passes including a pair to WR Don *Hutson.

In other NFC action

Philadelphia improved to 8-1 with a 13-7 win over Dallas. Two second half field goals from Eagles kicker C.R. Evans proved the difference.

With Sammy *Baugh still sidelined the Washington Redskins relied on a ground game and had little trouble handing the Giants their 7th straight loss. Bob *Seymour ran for two touchdowns and 140 yards in Washington's 28-16 win. The Redskins are 5-4 and still in the thick of the wildcard race.

Todd Berger became the first back to top the 1000 yard rushing mark this season. Berger gained 115 yards to help the New Orleans Saints beat Atlanta 27-13 and take over sole possession of top spot in the NFC South. Berger, the 1943 offensive rookie of the year, has 1005 yards after 9 games. Last season he ran for 2147 yards to lead the league.

Tampa and Carolina are both 3-6 after the Buccaneers beat the Panthers 28-20.

In the other NFC game Minnesota beat Detroit 13-7 despite the fact the Lions had twice as many yards of offense. Back-up QB Billy Campbell, starting in place of the injured Bob *Waterfield, had a tough time in the red zone.

BIG BRONCOS RALLY ROCKS RAIDERS
The Denver Broncos spotted the Raiders a 24-0 lead before galloping back with 31 unaswered points in a 31-24 victory in Oakland. The Raiders dominated the first half and led 17-0 thanks to a pair of Antwan Baker touchdown passes. On the first possession of the third quarter Johnny Cushing made it 24-0 when he broke a screen pass for a 62 yard touchdown. Then the Broncos suddenly came to life. Jay Cason threw third quarter touchdown passes to Jerry Watson and Chuck Gillingham to cut the lead to 24-14. Early in the 4th quarter Vincent Davenport made a 29 yard field goal. Oakland fumbled the ensuing kickoff and 2 plays later Oscar Hartings' 3 yard td run tied the game up at 24. The next Oakland possession ended early when Broncos SS Ed Newberry picked off his league leading 8th pass of the season. Cason's third touchdown pass of the game, a 39 yarder to Brian Gardner sealed the fantastic comeback for Denver.

The win gives the Bronos a 7-2 record, which is tops in the AFC. The Raiders fall to 3-6 in what has been an awful season for them. Reigning MVP Johnny Cushing had a terrific game in a losing effort. Cushing ran 15 times for 78 yards and had 7 receptions for 146 yards.

In other AFC action

New England and Buffalo battled to a 24-24 draw. The Patriots forced overtime with a 17 point fourth quarter outburst but neither club could muster any offense in the extra session.

With Bob Slaughter and Charley Carpenter both nursing injuries Jeff McDonald got his first NFL start at QB for the Browns. He completed 15 of 28 passes and threw for 3 touchdowns as Cleveland improved to 6-4 with a 24-17 win over Cincinnati.

5 Morgan Howard field goals led Kansas City past San Diego 15-13. It was a sloppy game with 6 turnovers and plenty of penalties.

QB Justin Jackson threw for 4 touchdowns as Jacksonville corralled the Houston Texans 31-7.

The Jets were on a roll, winning 4 straight, until they came up with a terrible effort in Miami. The 3-6 Dolphins beat New York 35-25 as Stacey Jolley ran for 155 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also caught a pass for a third major.

Pittsburgh improved to 6-4 with a 23-14 win over Baltimore. Major Dawson kicked 3 second half field goals to provide the margin of victory.

David Foster's fourth touchdown pass of the game allowed Indianapolis to upset Tennessee 32-31. The Colts scored 10 points in the final 8 minutes to earn their 3rd win of the season.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
RANGERS FINALLY PICK UP A VICTORY
After a very slow start in which they earned just one point in their first four games, the New York Rangers were on fire last week. New York began the week with a game Wednesday at Madison Square Garden against the Boston Bruins. Tony Leswick scored a pair of goals including the game winner as New York beat the Bruins 4-3 for their first win of the season. On Saturday they began a home and home weekend series with the Red Wings in Detroit. Leswick tallied once as New York rebounded from a 3-1 deficeit to earn a 3-3 tie. On Sunday, Lewick was again the hero as he scored with a little over a minute to play in the third period giving the Rangers a 4-3 win over the visiting Wings.

The Montreal Canadiens have passed Detroit for top spot thanks to a 3-0 victory over Toronto on Friday. Maurice Richard and Elmer Lach each had a goal and an assist for the Habs but the real star was Montreal netminder Bill Durnan. He turned aside all 31 Toronto shots he faced for his first shutout of the season. Durnan leads the league with a goals against average of just 1.00. Boston has also being getting some solid goaltending from Frank Brimsek and the Bruins finally rewarded him with some offense. After losing to the Rangers on Wednesday the Bruins beat Toronto and Chicago over the weekend. Forward Joe Carveth continues to hold the hot hand for the Bruins. He notched a hat trick against the Leafs Saturday and his 7 goals on the season trail only league leader Rocket Richard's total of 8. Max Bentley continues to pile up the points despite the fact the Black Hawks lost both their games last week. The defending league scoring champ is tied with Richard for the point lead with 11.
