IN THE NEWS: In the 6th inning of a game with the Tigers, Harry Davis of the A's attempts a double steal with Lave Cross (Dave Fultz IRL), who is on 3B. But Davis does not draw a throw as he goes into 2B. On the next pitch he "steals" 1B. The next time he steals 2B he does draw a throw and Cross (Fultz) scores from 3B. This double steal maneuver will be attempted in later years by Fred Tenney (July 31, 1908), and Germany Schaefer (September 4, 1908), though the details are contradictory.

Thursday, August 14th

In a 27-2 thrubbing over the Cardinals, Wee Willie Keeler becomes the 1st player in the 20th century to have 6 hits in a game
...Wiley Dunham walks a NL record (Broncho Ed Scott walked 16 last year) with 13
Wild Bill Donoovan lives up to his reputation with 5 BB 9 Ks and only 4 hits...allowing 2 runs on Keeler's throwing error

IN THE NEWS: Ban Johnson announces the AL's intention to have a New York team in 1903, with Clark Griffith as manager. The Baltimore franchise will be moved.

IN true Rube Waddell fashion, Rube allows 6 hits, 5 BBs, and K's 12 in a 6-2 win over the surprising Bill Reidy (19-9) and the Browns. Ollie Pickering hits in his 20th straight game.

Sunday, August 31st

Fielder Jones goes 6-6 to become the 2nd 6 hit man in MLB, in a 16-0 White Stocking win over the Nationals. Fred Mitchell, traded for Ned Garvin July 31st scatters 6 hits, 1BB, 2 Ks in the the SHO. Washington commits 4 errors, 2 by Happy Townsend who is knocke dout of the box in 4.2 IP in his worst outing of the year

At Sportsman Park, Cy Young gets his 3rd SHO of the year scattering 3 hits, 0 BB, 4Ks, but the story in the 10-0 win is Buck Freeman who hits 2 HRS (he leads with 9) and driving in 8 RBIS the ML record. Cy Young goes to 19-10 with a 2.37 ERA on the year

Christy Mathewson wins his 7th straight and 20th of the year in an 11-3 win over the Chicago Colts

John T. Brush sells the Cincinnati Reds to Julius and Max Fleischmann, George B. Cox, and August "Garry" Herrmann for $150,000. Brush then buys control of the Giants from Andrew Freedman.

Sunday, Sept 19th

In the last ML game at Baltimore until the 60's, Ed Scott (18-13) and the Bronchos beat Long Tom Hughes (18-17) 10-2

Thursday, Sept 18th

In his 1st game back from his 6 month prison stay, 'Turkey' Mike Donlin goes 0-4 in a 7-1 Reds' loss to the Pirates

Cy Young wins his 22nd game in a 5-3 victory over the White Stockings and 21 game loser Fred Mitchella former teammate

Eddie Plank gets a 6-3 win over Detroit, Plank finishes at 13-21 through no fault of his own, he has the lowest run support of any pitcher with 35 game starts with 2.8

Noodles Hahn finishes the year at 14-11 with a 2.17 ERA, of Noodles 14 wins, 9 of them he allowed 1 run or less. Of his 11 losses and 13 no decisions, 20 times he allowed 3 runs or less.

Monday, Sept 22nd

With both teams at 80-60 The Cleveland Bronchos play host to the Chicago White Stockings for the AL Pennant.

With injuries Chicago sends 9-9 Gene McCann who held Cleveland to 2 hits in August to the mound and Cleveland sends Addie Joss

Addie Joss pitches a gem and Jack McCarthy goes 4-6 with 4 RBIS to claim the AL Pennant from the White Stockings
