Game 8: Tampa Bay 4, New York 5 (10)
Jeff Suppan's debut with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was spoiled in the bottom of the 10th inning, when Danys Baez let inherited runner Jorge Posada score from third base with the game winning run on a single by Mike Bordick. The loss knocked Tampa Bay out of first place in the American League East.
The Devil Rays led the game three to nothing before the Yankees rallied with two runs in the sixth and seven innings to take the lead against Suppan, who earned a no-decision while surrendered nine hits in 7.2 innings of work. Tampa tied the game in the eighth inning when Mariano Rivera's pitch to Toby Hall bounced in front of the plate, getting by Posada and advancing Geoff Blum to third. Hall easily knocked him home with a single to short right-center that fell between Bordick and Kenny Lofton.

Game 9: Tampa Bay 9, New York 14
Tampa Bay starting pitching continues to let the team down. As the offense keeps putting up great numbers, the pitching staff keeps surrendering runs like it's going out of style. This time, it was Victor Zambrano who was unable to keep the Yankees off the board, allowing five runs in just one and a third innings. Alex Rodriguez opened the scoring, launching a solo-homerun to deep left field in the first for an early one run lead.
Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli, both batting better than .430 this season, continue to be the spark of Tampa's offense. The dynamic duo at the top of the order knocked in the first two Devil Rays run in the third to close the gap to 7-2 after three innings. Tampa sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth to come within one run, but Travis Harper gave the game away in the bottom of the inning, allowing four runs before being replaced by Trevor Miller after recording just two outs. The big hit of that inning was Alex Rodrguez's second homerun of the day, a three-run shot into the upper deck in right field.
