NEW BASKETBALL LEAGUE TAKES FLIGHT THIS WEEK
The 11 team professional basketball loop that dubs itself the Basketball Association of America will tip-off it's inagural season this Friday as the New York Knickerbockers visit the Toronto Huskies. The league is the brainchild of several arena owners in the northeast who were looking for a way to fill additional dates in their large arenas.
Here is a brief look at the key players on each of the 11 teams.
EAST DIVISION
BOSTON CELTICS - The Celtics will be led by 6'8" center Connie Simmons, former Long Beach State star Al Brightman and Chuck Connors, who is also a budding baseball star and actor. John Russell, a longtime ABLer will coach the Celtics.
NEW YORK KNICKERBOCKERS - Composed almost exclusively of former New York area college stars including Sidney Hertzberg, John Palmer and Ossie Schectman.
PHILADELPHIA WARRIORS - Coach Eddie Gottlieb has assembled a fine cast led by former Murray State legend Joe Fulks. Fulks, who served in the Marines after graduating in 1943, has a machine gun jump shot and will be the key to the Warriors success.
PROVIDENCE STEAMROLLERS - Former Rhode Island guard Ernie Calverley will be the leader of this club. Center Hank Beenders, who played at Long Island and ex-Georgetown guard Donald Martin will add some offense.
TORONTO HUSKIES - Probably the riskiest gamble for a franchise's success, it remains to be seen if the Huskies will draw much interest from hockey-mad Toronto. A lack of talent will likely make it even harder to sell the team as Mike McCarron, who played at Seton Hall, and ex-Youngstown State guard Leo Mogus are the best of these dogs. Canadian Hank Biasatti, a minor league baseball player, has been added to the squad in an effort to increase local interest.
WASHINGTON CAPITOLS - The coaching reigns have been handed to a brash 29 year old high school coach named Red Aurebach. The team has loads of experience and should be a contender for top spot in the division. The leader is guard Bob Feerick, a superb floor general who jumped over from the N. B. L.. Joining Feerick in the backcourt will be Freddie Scolari, a top shooter. in the forecourt are ex-Rochester center John Mahnken, forward Johnny Norlander, and 27-year-old rookie Bones McKinney, who just completed his war-interripted career at North Carolina.
WEST DIVISION
CHICAGO STAGS - Chicago coach Ole Olsen has built a quick fast break around rebounding center Chick Halbert, feeder Mickey Rottner, and set-shooter Max Zaslofsky.
CLEVELAND REBELS - Center Ed Sadowski, who played his college ball at Seton Hall, will be the go-to guy on offense. The backcourt is strong with Frankie Baumholtz, a future major league baseball player, and rookie Kenny Sailors, who was a fine playmaker in college at Wyoming.
DETROIT FALCONS - Bulky forward Stan Miasek appears to have emerged as the Falcons leader. Seems to be a real lack of offense aside from Miasek and perhaps former Valparaiso foreward John Janisch.
PITTSBURGH IRONMEN - Not a lot of talent so it will likely be a real long season for the Ironmen. Coulby Gunther, who played at Boston College, and Etna, Pennsylvania native John Abramovic are the best of a weak lot.
ST LOUIS BOMBERS - Ex-Yale coach Ken Loeffler will guide the Bombers and he has assembled a running team with former Indiana Hoosier guard Johnny Logan as the leader. Belus Smawley, a guard from Applachian State and ex-Colorado forward Bob Doll will also be counted on.
