CLEVELAND INDIANS WIN WORLD SERIES
The Cleveland Indians celebrated their 3rd World Series title in franchise history with a 7-1 victory over Pittsburgh in Game 6 of the Fall Classic. All 3 of the Indians titles have come in the past 5 years. Prior to that the Indians had won 3 other American League titles but lost in the World Series on all 3 occassions, including twice to the Pirates in 1915 and 1937.
Indians pitcher Allie Reynolds, who tossed two complete game victories including a 4-hitter in the series finale, was named the World Series MVP. Other deserving candidates from the Indians included shortstop Lou Boudreau (.381,0,3) and catcher Clyde Klutz (.348,0,3). Aside from rookie Ralph Kiner, who hit .318. few of the Pirates performed up to expectations.
GAME 5 - Monday October 9, 1946
A sold out Cleveland Stadium was all set to celebrate a series clinching victory in game 5 but the visiting Pirates sent the crowd home unhappy. Arky Vaughan and Bill Elliott hit the first two Pittsburgh homers of the series as the Pirates won 5-3. Pittsburgh starter Ken Heintzelman held the Indians to just 4 hits in 8 innings work and Dutch Dietz earned the save despite allowing an Indian run on 2 hits in the bottom of the ninth. Steve Gromek, who blanked the Pirates on a 2-hit 8 inning performance in game 2, allowed 7 hits in taking the loss.
GAME 6 - Wednesday October 11, 1946
A rematch of game 3 when Allie Reynolds and the Indians beat Preacher Roe and the Pirates 5-4. This time the game was in Pittsburgh but once again the hometown fans went home dissappointed. Trailing 3 games to two entering the contest, the Pirates clung to a slim hope that they could win 2 straight at home to complete the comeback from a 3-0 deficeit.
The Cleveland first inning certainly put a damper on that hope. Arky Vaughan committed a rare throwing error that allowed leadoff man Ival Goodman to reach first. Charlie English followed with a double to make it 1-0 Cleveland and the Oscar Grimes delivered a sharp single to make it 2-0. Grimes moved to second on the play at the plate in a failed effort to retire English and a moment later he came around to score on a Jeff Heath single. It was 3-0 Indians before a single out had been recorded. Roe settled down and got out of the inning without further damage but it would turn out that 3 runs was more than enough offense for Cleveland pitcher Allie Reynolds.
Reynolds ran into a little trouble with nerves in the first inning, allowing the Pirates to load the bases on two walks and a single. He also walked in a run when he gave Tony Cuccinello a free pass but finally got out of the jam with no other problems. From that point on Reynolds would be nearly perfect - walking just one more Pirate and allowing just 3 hits the rest of the way.
Cleveland would add a run in the second on a Clyde Klutz doubled and an rbi single from English. In the 5th English would double and score on a double from Lou Boudreau to make it 5-1. A wild pitch from Roe in the 7th would allow Goodman to score another run and pitcher Reynolds would deliver a sack fly in the 8th to make the final score 7-1 Cleveland.
CHAMPS MAY HAVE SOME BIG HOLES TO FILL NEXT SEASON
Next season is a long way off but the Cleveland Indians could have some holes to fill in the offseason as age takes it toll. Leftfielder Ival Goodman has hinted he may retire and the Indians may also need to find a new number 4 starter and perhaps a second baseman.
Goodman is 38 and coming off a season where he missed 6 weeks with a broken hand. He had hinted before the series that winning it all for the third time in his career would be a nice way to go out. However, he hit a career best .342, albeit in just 94 games, and may have a change of heart once spring training rolls around. Teammate Charlie English will be 37 next month and there is a question as to how much the Cleveland second sacker has left in the tank. He hit a respectable .273 but his defense suffered a little this year. Pitching wise, the top 3 in the rotation should certainly be back but the Indians are facing the possibility that number 4 starter Claude Passeau may retire at the age of 37. Passeau won 21 games 4 years ago but since then has endured seasons of 12-13, 10-19 and 13-16.
As for replacements, the Indians have plenty of outfield depth so Goodman could be replaced if he leaves. 34 year old Jim Gleason hit .310 as a backup this season while 26 year old Paul O'Dea could be ready to make the full-time jump from AAA. For the rotation 3 pitchers in their mid-twenties could fight to replace Passeau. Injury prone Bob Feller, 27, was 12-8 at AAA this season. 26 year old Bob Lemon may need more seasoning and 25 year old Dick Fowler has 5 seasons of AAA under his belt. Second base could be a big problem spot if English chooses to retire. 34 year old Don Gutteridge would likely win the job by default despite hitting just .248 in 62 games this season.
NFL WEEK 7 ROUNDUP
NEWBERRY SHINES AS BRONCOS IMPROVE TO 6-1
What Edgerrin Newberry accomplished in one day is a career for some defensive backs. The Denver Broncos all-star strong safety played the game of his life in leading Denver to a big 41-10 win over AFC West rival San Diego. Newberry's stats are as follows - 9 tackles, 2 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns. It will be remembered as one of the best games ever recorded by a defensive player.
Newberry, who graduated from TCU 11 years ago and has never missed a game in the Broncos 5 and a half NFL season, is the league's alltime leader in defensive touchdowns with 19. He has made either the first or second AFC allstar team each of the past 4 years and his 46 career interceptions are second only to Cincinnati's Mac Wiley. He is also third alltime in fumble recoveries with 30.
Denver built a 24-3 lead at the half and coasted to victory. QB Jay Cason threw for 211 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running back Oscar Hartings scored once and gained 75 yards rushing. The win puts the Broncos at 6-1 on the season and ties them with New England for the best record in the conference.
In other AFC action
The Kansas City Chiefs worked the clock to keep Oakland running back Johnny Cushing off the field as much as possible and it paid off in a 13-6 victory. Chiefs back Bruce Jones carried the ball 25 times for 127 yards and what would prove to be the winning touchdown. Jones, with 821 yards, is the league's leading rusher so far this season. Johnny Cushing of the Raiders gained 81 yards and caught 6 passes but was held out of the endzone. Cushing also turned the ball over twice but it was a fumble from Oakland TE Walter Van Galder that proved most costly. He fumbled the ball on the Chiefs 19 yard line with just under 3 minutes to play.
Bob Irvin threw 4 touchdown passes to help lead the New England Patriots past AFC East rival Miami by a 38-20 score.
Steve *Van Buren ran for 132 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns as the Jets surprised Buffalo 44-7. The Bills, who have dropped 4 straight after winning their first 3 games of the season, played one of the worst defensive games in franchise history. The Jets started 0-4 but have now won 3 straight including handing the 6-1 Broncos their only loss of the season. The Jets will face another 6-1 team next week - New England, who beat the Jets in New York 13-3 in week 2.
Mickey Marangi ran for 123 yards and Willie Smart returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown as Pittsburgh beat Baltimore 23-14. Ravens QB Larry Martin was picked off 3 times in the game.
Cleveland is tied with Pittsburgh atop the AFC North at 4-3 after the Browns beat Cincinnati 38-21. Browns TE Ron Williams caught a pair of touchdown passes and RB Art Basnight picked up 126 yards on the ground to lead Cleveland.
Jacksonville scored 17 4th quarter points to rally past Indianapolis 24-11. Jags SS Ken Milloy had 10 tackles and one of 3 Jacksonville interceptions in the game.
Tennessee stayed a game ahead of Jacksonville in the AFC south with a 31-17 win in Houston. Brad Gibron had 7 catches for 157 yards and one touchdown to lead the Titans.
LUCKMAN LEADS AS BEARS MAUL VIKINGS 31-10
Just another day at the office for Sid *Luckman and the 6-0 Chicago Bears. Luckman completed 21 of 28 passes for 294 yards as Chicago remains perfect following a 31-10 win at Minnesota. George *McAfee helped the Bears cause with a pair of rushing touchdowns while safety Frankie Morrall had 8 tackles, a sack and returned an interception for a touchdown. The Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles, who had a bye this week, are the only unbeaten teams remaining in the league.
In other NFC play
Bob *Waterfield hit a snag in his development as a pro quarterback. The Detroit Lions signal caller was picked off 4 times as Green Bay humbled the Lions 24-6. The victory, just the second of the season for the Packers, was the first as a starter for Packers QB Jordan Montana. Montana completed just 11 of 27 passes but did connect with veteran Don *Hutson for a pair of touchdowns.
New Orleans and Atlanta are tied for top spot in the NFC South with 3-3 records. The Falcons blanked Tampa Bay 24-0 behind 184 yard rushing performance from Antowain Anderson. The total, while impressive, was a far cry from the individual game record of 268 yards rushing, set by Anderson last season against the same Bucs defense. Meanwhile in Carolina the Saints beat the Panthers 24-13. QB Ryan Boyette led the New Orleans offense with 326 yards passing and a pair of touchdown strikes to WR Cornelius Roundtree.
The San Francisco 49ers improved to 5-2 with a 28-10 victory over Seattle. Travis Henderson ran for 83 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the victory. Niners QB Quentin Morton, making the first start in his 6 year career in place of the injured Koy Harris and the benched Ike Meier, completed just 11 of 25 passes and was picked off once. However, the San Francisco defense easily handled the weak Seahawks offense. The nightmare rookie season for 4th overall pick Marion *Motley continues. The Seattle running back coughed up the ball deep in San Francisco territory ruining a scoring drive. Motley has gained just 282 yards in 7 games, has fumbled 5 times and has yet to reach the endzone.
Tuffy *Leemans ran for 102 yards to help Arizona improve to 4-3 with a 17-13 win over the St Louis Rams.

ARKANSAS MAKES BIG JUMP IN POLLS
Linebacker Bob *Forte scooped up a 4th quarter fumble and rumbled 28 yards into the endzone to give the Arkansas Razorbacks a 14-13 upset victory over 6th ranked Texas. Forte, who is a highly touted pro prospect had another dominating day on defense, so much so that there is even more Heisman Trophy buzz circulating about the senior middle linebacker. Running Back Don Porter had another strong day for Arkansas, gaining 140 yards on the ground and scoring the Razorbacks other touchdown. The win boosts Arkansas from 18th to 10th in the polls and puts them in the drivers seat in the SWC title race. The loss drops Texas 6 places to 12th in the poll.
