THE BOXING BEAT
Not a lot going on in the boxing world right now as all of the World Titles except for flyweight have been decided. As you may recall after boxing all but ceased to operate during WWII it was determined that a year long elimination tournament be staged to decide upon a new champion from each of the weight classes. The only issue occurred in the flyweight division where the top two fighters, Little Dado of the Phillipines and Britian's Teddy Gardner battled to a 15 round majority draw. The two will stage a rematch in Paris, France on October 27.

Here are the plans for the title holder and number one contender in each of the weight classes.

HEAVYWEIGHT - Champion Joe Louis (8-0) will fight 4th ranked Nathan Mann (18-4-1) in late February while number one contender Elmer Ray (23-4) will fight Roscoe Coles (18-4) in early February. If both win it is expected Louis and Ray will meet in the early fall of next year.

LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT Champion Lloyd Marshall (22-4-1) is expected to face Henry Hall (19-13-3) in May while number one challenger Archie Moore (31-2) will fight Jimmy Blivins (28-3) in June.

MIDDLEWEIGHT - Champion Jake Lamotta (14-0) will meet Tony Zale (35-4) the second week of January while number one challenger Holman Williams (26-1) is expected to face 6th ranked George Abrams (31-4-2) in April.

WELTERWEIGHT - Champion Sugar Ray Robinson (11-1) is slated to face 6th ranked Tommy Bell (27-2) in May while top contender Jackie Wilson (28-3-1) will meet 4th ranked Marty Servo (29-4-1) a month later.

LIGHTWEIGHT - Number 3 ranked Bob Montgomery (9-0) puts his undefeated record on the line in his hometown of Philadelphia on November 24th against up and coming Australian fighter Vic Patrick (11-2). Champion Ike Williams (18-0) is expected to face Mexican Enrique Bolonas (14-1) in March while number 1 ranked challenger Joe Brown (12-2) is slated to face Jimmy Carter (14-4) a month later. Williams next defense will be in late July and likely against either Brown or Montgomery.

FEATHERWEIGHT - Undefeated champion Willie Pep (17-0) will face 4th ranked Charlie Riley (22-4) in May while top contender Harold Hoshino (25-3-1) meets 6th ranked George Hansford (20-12) a week or two later.

BANTAMWEIGHT - There was a European Title fight held this week in Rome, Italy for the vacant European Bantamweight belt. Luis Romero (20-6-1) of Spain beat Guido Ferracin (27-5-2) of Italy by a 9th round knockout. World champion Fernando Gagnon (32-3-1) of Canada will defend his title in April against Manuel Ortiz (37-1-2) while top contender Tony Olivera (25-2-2) is slated to meet new European champ Luis Romero a month later. .
