Mariners Hold On After 9th Inning collapse
Seattle (AP)
April 7, 2004
Game 2 Jarrod Washburn (NR) Vs Freddy Garcia (NR)
Mariners headed into the 9th inning with a 5-2 lead and in came Guardado so everyone figured game over. We were soon to find out that this game was far from over. The inning started off with Pinch Hitter Jeff Davanon and he lead off with a solo homerun. After finally getting an out Anderson came up and doubled and then was drove in by a 2 run homerun by Josh Phelps to tie things up. Glaus would also drive in a run this inning to give the Angels the lead. The Mariners head to the bottom half, demoralized and lifeless. But with 1 down Edgar Martinez homered to tie up the game, and send this game to extras. IN extras the Mariners Julio Mateo came into pitch for the 2nd straight day. He did very well not giving up a run. In the bottom of the 10th Ibanez lead off with a single then Ben Davis bunted him to 2nd. SO up next with a chance to win the game was Willie Bloomquist. Willie smoked a double to the give and won the game for the Mariners as Raul Ibanez scored for the Mariners.
Freddy Garcia had nasty stuff going today. He went 7 innings allowing 2 hits, 2 runs, and only one of the runs was earned. Garcia also struck out 9 in his 2004 season debut. Washburn for the Angels had a rough outing going 6.1 innings allowing 7 hits and 5 ER while striking out 5 and walking 6. Guardado and Percival blew the saves for their teams. This was Percivals 2nd blown save in as many days.
Winning Pitcher: Julio Mateo (1-0, 0.00)
Losing Pitcher: Troy Percival (0-1, 8.10)
Final Score 7-6
Tampa Bay remained unbeaten as they are now 4-0 after sweeping the Yankees.
