3 Game Series Vs Anaheim at Safeco Field in Seattle
Seattle (AP)
April 6, 2004
Game 1 Bartolo Colon (NR) Vs Jamie Moyer (NR)
This was almost the great way to start a season. Both starters pitched great with Colon pitching 8 shutout innings while only allowing 2 hits and striking out 3. Moyer was also stellar in the opener going 7.1 innings allowing 1 ER and 5 hits while striking out 3. The Angels would strike first in the 2004 season opener on a 4th inning RBI single by offseason acqusition Jose Guillen. That would be the only run until the 9th inning. In the 9th with one guy down the Mariners brought in releiver J.J. Putz to pitch to Troy Glaus with no one on. Putz threw 2 pitches to Glaus and the 2nd resulted in a 389 FT bomb to make it 2-0 Angels. The Mariners would get the final 2 outs of the inning and head to the bottom half of the inning down 2-0. Colon would come out to start the 9th but he would only face one batter and Ichiro singled to left, that end Colon's night so incame Troy Percival. On Percivals 2nd pitch Ichiro stole 2nd base. On the very next pitch with 0 out Martinez smoked a base hit into left to score Ichiro from 2nd making it 2-1 Angels. Martinez would take 2nd on a throw home to try and get Ichiro. So now we have 2nd and 3rd with 0 down Boone and Olerud would groundout to the mound and no one would score so with 2 outs and the game on the line up came Leftfielder Raul Ibanez. Ibanez would hit a single to right to tie the game at 2 and Percival blew his first save of the year. But now the Mariners ahve Aurilla up with men on 1st and 3rd. Oh well what's that matter nothing to Aurilla he gorunds out to the mound to end the 9th on to extras we go.
In the 10th and 1th there were no action what so ever except a single by pinch hitter Chone Figgins. in the 11th the Mariners brought in Ryan Franklin he would pitch a good 11th. In the 12th on Franklins 8th pitch of the AB to 1B Josh Phelps Phelps crushed one to deep leftfield that barely cleared the wall but it did and it gave the Angels a 3-2 lead. Franklin would finish the 12th giving up nothing else. In the bottom half of the inning with one down Raul Ibanez single to leftfield. But Aurilla came up and grounded out and same with Dave Hansen and the Mariners would fall on opening day 3-2 to the divisional rivals Anaheim Angels.
