Yankees, D-rays start season in Japan
New York Times
March 30, 2004
Today is opening day for 2 teams from the AL East. The Yankees and the Devil Rays will be starting the season in Japan today at 5:05 AM EST. These 2 teams will be the onlt teams in action today in Major League Baseball. Americas first game will be April 4, 2004 between the HaTeD Redsox and the Baltimore Orioles. D-Rays manager Lou Pinella has guaranteed that his team will not finish in last place this season. Every year since the team exsisted the D-Rays have finished in last place. But once again Lou has guaranteed not this year.
The pitching matchup for the D-Rays and Yankees was Kevin Brown acquired from LA for Jeff Weaver Vs Doug Waechter one of Tampa's many decent prospects. Brown in his career in LA was troubled by back and neck problems but still managed a decent time while he was there. Brown went to the Dodgers after the Marlins won the world series in 1997. Brown was 58-32 with a 3.09 ERA in 5 seasons with LA. Brown is looking to bounce back and have an injury free season with the Yankees and he will have to be strong if the Yankees expect to contend because their pitching is not good at all. Doug Waechter is making only his 6th start of his career. Last year with the D-Rays he started 5 games and went 3-2 with a 3.31 ERA. The D-rays dont look to be that bad of a team if the pitching holds up I expect Lou's guarantee to come true.
Here are the lineups for both teams on opening day.
Tampa Bay 14 Yankees 6
