There was a long discussion at one point and I seem to remember either Steve or Markus clarified that once the program decides theres a Homerun (using game result + player's rating + ballpark "rating") then the game simply determines distance (randomly) using the fence distance as a minimum.
Steve / Markus - correct me if I'm wrong ???

Not quite... the minimum is the fence distance, of course. But light-hitting guys do not hit HRs to center that often, and they do not have a great chance to hit the ball far beyond the fence. The chance of a long homerun is a lot higher for the HR-hitting guys (HR-rating of 8+).
