Being that "National Pastime" was first used when technology was not nearly as advanced as now... the only things to do where to go outside and play. Sports were the national pastime and especially baseball.

Now I would say that the national pastime is not sports. Would probably be watching TV like the post above... or for younger people now days that might even be video games.
