Even though the figures you put into the league totals are actually league stats - don't think of them that way. Think of them as the "base" or "average" from which everything else is compared.
Let's start by first understanding that players are normally created (talking about fictional here for now) with 5's as the average (note: on a 1-10 scale 5.5 is actually the average but we'll use "5" for demonstration). Very important... remember that these players are created based on the league totals - thus if the league totals are set to represent an average .260 batting average - that's your 5 rating.
For simplicity, let's assume the following. The 3rd set of numbers is the actual number of hits expected based on 600 ABs....
3 = .240 = 144
4 = .250 = 150
5 = .260 = 156 (average)
6 = .270 = 162
7 = .280 = 168
Now let's assume we have 11 players in the league as follows...
3 = .240 = 1 * 144 = 144
4 = .250 = 2 * 150 = 300
5 = .260 = 5 * 156 = 780
6 = .270 = 2 * 162 = 324
7 = .280 = 1 * 168 = 168
That totals 1,716 hits.
Ok... we play a season and decide we want the league batting average to be .270 instead of .260. That's a 3.8% increase which should net us 1,782 hits - a 66 hit increase.
Here's the important detail (VERY important) - since we can't re-calculate the ratings of the players, we have to handle this some other way. Let's first move the average...
3 = .240 = 1
4 = .250 = 2
5 = .260 = 5
6 = .270 = 2 (average)
7 = .280 = 1
8 of our 11 players are now "below" what we want the league average to be. For the league to average .270 all the players are going to have to perform one level above their actual ratings. For that to happen, the game needs you to input an adjustment.
If the "5" players need to hit .270, the only way we can make this happen (without changing their rating) is to change the numbers they are compared with (league totals). By lowering the number of hits from the value that was used to create the players, we are making them better. A "5" will perform like a "6" etc. This adjusts the table to look like this.....
3 = .240 now = .250 = 1 * 150 = 150
4 = .250 now = .260 = 2 * 156 = 312
5 = .260 now = .270 = 5 * 162 = 810
6 = .270 now = .280 = 2 * 168 = 336
7 = .280 now = .290 = 1 * 174 = 174
...or 1,782 hits !!
I hope this helps... Remember that this all becomes necessary because the players have already been created when you change the numbers they were created from !! The only other choice would be to change their ratings... something that opens up all kinds of worms.
