A Question About League Totals

As it is now and I assume it has been since V. 1 (I have been a faithful customer since V. 2), to raise or lower certain stats in the game you need to raise or lower them in the league totals... i.e. to raise homers you lower the homer total for the league.... to lower hits you raise the hit totals....

Maybe I am just not very knowledgeable about coding this kind of statistical game (okay, so I am not very knowledgeable about coding any kind of game) but why is it that way? Why is it not just raise homer league totals (without raising league at bats) to get higher homer numbers and so on...

I ask because of having to do the opposite to get the numbers the way I want them it can take a lot of test seasons to get just the right numbers you want (which is why IatricSB's Era Calculator is such a valuable commodity).

Gibson swings, and a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, 5 to 4; I don't believe what I just saw! I don't believe what I just saw!
