It occured after a rather busy off-season, so I am going to just include everything I did, since I don't know what might have contributed to the problem.

I finished the 2046 season in Manager Mode, and backup up the league, then proceeded to the next season. When the next season began (before signing coaches and scouts), I retired the current manager. I made one change to the league while I could edit it, taking a free agent pitching coach, and changing his name and birthdate to match that of the son of my retired manager who had played a few years in the majors.

I then started a new manager career, with a different team, and made many roster moves, trades and a few free agent signings. Everything seems okay and I moved through spring training, so after setting the depth charts, lineups and pitching roster, I again backed up the league. Then I tried to sim the first month.

After the first day of the season, I received an email (which I chose not to read) and the game updated the standings and leaders from the first day, then continued to sim the second day, at which point it just stopped. I waited a half hour or so, but it never updated the standings with the results of the second day, and I was not able to regain control of the game, so I ended the process. When I restarted it, the standings were updated so that every team had played two games, but the stats from the second day were missing. I then tried to sim again, and the same thing happened. I watched it sim all the games, but it was never able to update the standings or stats.

After a few tries, I restored the backup I'd made prior to the first game and tried again, but I could never get through even the first day completely, nor could I over three more attempts to restore the backup. What is particularly interesting is that on the very first occasion, I was able to get through the first day and to the second. If the problem hadn't happened yet, it wouldn't be included in the backup and if it had happened prior to the backup, I never should have gotten through day one. The only thing I can imagine is that getting that email (which I never read, but I assume was a retirement notification) somehow "pushed through" to the next day. Maybe that will give you guys some kind of clue?

Since I couldn't access the board last week to ask for advice, I finally gave up and restored the backup from the end of the 2046 season and went through the whole process of rebuilding my team again. This time, I everything went off without a hitch, and I am currently in my third year of the new manager career.

So it's not a horrible problem for me at this point, but I thought you should know about it so you can track down the problem. I still have the original backup if there is anything you would like me to check.
Same problem happened to us in ULB, an online league. We did end up having to resim one week, but after many thorough tests, we found the hang up error related to releasing one specific player. Prior to that sim, approximately a dozen players were released in total, but only one specific player kept causing the hang up; the others had no effect whatsoever. I'd check to see what kind of roster moves you made, especially releases, and try to pinpoint which player it might have been. If you're able to find who it is, it might be worth it to let that player sit in your system instead of trying to release him and fighting the game hang up.
