From a recent news article.

Phillies in trouble after losing the Gay Factor!

Philadelphia Dispatch:

It's already turning out as a rough season for Phillies fans. Injuries have put a hurt on the team's pitching staff, which is pretty much the franchise's formula for success. "First we lost Fred (Beene)," said manager Frank Lucchesi, "then it was Claude (Osteen) and then it was Gay (Gaylord Perry). It's gone from worse to horrible in about a week. Without Gay going every fourth or fifth day, we don't stand much of a chance." Though Perry is scheduled to return this week and Osteen is already off the DL, Lucchesi is still worried that Perry's pulled elbow ligament may flare up again soon.

One bright spot for the Phillies this week was a surprisingly strong start from reliever Luke Walker, who was thrust into the starting position after Perry and Osteen both went down. Walker went the full 9 innings in a 2-1 win over Houston, giving up 8 hits, 1 earned run, with 2 walks. His ERA dropped to 1.32 for the year. Philadelphia took two of three from the Astros in that series, keeping them one game below .500 and 5 games out of first place.

"We're in a tight spot," Lucchesi said this week. "We just can't afford to lose our big guns in the rotation. We were forced to bring up two guys who just aren't ready for the majors yet. Any time you do that, you know you're headed for trouble."
