April 1937
The Yankees started the season well by winning 7 of their first 9 games, but then they lost 2-of-3 games in 4 of their next 5 series. That allowed the rest of the league to stay close. The AL has been very evenly matched so far, and even last place Detroit is only 5 games out.
The Cubs exploded out of the gate, winning 10 of their first 12 games. The Bees pulled into first by winning 9 of 10 games in the middle of the month, but the Cubs moved back into the lead by finishing the month strong. The Reds and Dodgers have played well and are making the early race interesting. Unfortunately for Chicago, they lost first baseman
Howard "Cookie" Parrish for the entire season with a torn hamstring. He contributed a .325 average, 28 homers and 115 RBI to their pennant-winning drive last season. Taking his place has been 23-year-old
Dan Troge, who has been a more than capable starter and is currently 2nd in the NL batting race.

John "Lucky" Ryan, 2B, Indians - Lucky was traded to Cleveland on the last day of the month in return for an outfield prospect. It may work out for the best since Ryan is just 19 and the rest of the Indians infield is over 30, except for 29-year-old SS David Boyle. Ryan can learn some tricks from veterans like "Duckie" Andrew and Stanley Dancer while biding his time for a starting job, which he should almost certainly get since the Indians' only other infield prospect with any potential is a third baseman in Single-A.
Genarito "Junior" Nunez, LF, Senators - Nunez hit .425 in 18 games at AA and was promoted to AAA in just his 2nd pro season. He is so far hitting .333 there.
