7 RUN 8TH GIVES AMERICAN LEAGUE ALL STAR BRAGGING RIGHTS
the bottom of the 8th inning helped the American League overcome a 6-5 deficiet and turn the All-Star game into a laugher. Billy Johnson of the Yankees hit a bases loaded triple and Washington's Phil Cavarretta delivered a 2-run homer to key a 7 run outburst in the bottom of the 8th inning as the American Leaguers won 12-6. It was the third victory in the last 4 years for the Junior Circuit. Browns starter Tom Baker earned the victory while Mickey Haefner of the Dodgers was tagged with the loss after allowing 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning.

The NL jumped out to an early when leadoff man Arky Vaughan of the Pirates worked AL starter Tiny Bonham for a walk. The Cards Stan Musial singled and 2 batters later Tony Cuccinello of Pittsburgh hit a 3-run homer off of the New York Yankee ace.

The AL got one run back when Yankee catcher Bob Scheffing drew a one out walk from Giants starter Cliff Melton and moved to third on a double from Ted Williams of the Red Sox. Scheffing scored on a sacfly from Oscar Grimes of the Indians.

Veteran Cardinals outfielder Ben Chapman made it 4-1 Nationals in the second when he hit a 2-out rbi single but in the home half the American Leaguers took the lead after a 4-run outburst. A 2-run double off the bat of the A's Roy Cullenbine was the big blow. Bonham and Melton finally settled down in the third and each retired the side in order.

Washington pitcher Red Barrett was lit up for 2 runs in his only inning of work. Enos Slaughter of St Louis and Cuccinello drove in runs in the 5th to make it 6-5 Nationals.

It stayed 6-5 until the American League bats exploded in the 8th. Ted Williams led off with a single off Haefner. Buddy Lewis of the Sens fanned but then Tommy Henrich of Detroit singled and Cleveland's Jeff Heath drew a walk to load the bases. Cincinnati reliever Johnny Hetki took over on the hill but he was greeted by pinch-hitter Billy Johnson who ripped a triple into the rightfield corner. Skeeter Newsome of the A's followed with a single to plate Johnson to make it 9-6. The National's went to their third pitcher of the inning but Ernie White of the Cardinals had no more success than the previous two. White faced pinch-hitter Cavarretta, and the Senators outfielder greeted him with a 2 run. Singles from Babe Young of the Red Sox and Al Evans of Washington brought Ted Williams to the plate again. Williams drove in a run with his second single of the inning. Bill Voiselle of the Giants became the 4th pitcher of the inning for the NL and he struck out Buddy Lewis, who fanned for the second time in the inning, and then got Henrich to ground out to finally put an end to things.

Washington's Joe Beggs came on to pitch the 9th inning for the AL and, despite a double from Alex Kampouris of Cincinnati and a single from his Reds teammate Ford Garrison, held the Nationals scoreless in the 9th.

Ted Williams of Boston, who went 3-for-5 with an rbi and a run scored was named the game's MVP.

PIRATES TAKE 3 of 4 FROM DODGERS - LEAD IS NOW 4.5 GAMES
In a key showdown between the National League's top two clubs it was the the hometown Pittsburgh Pirates who came out on top. The Pirates won 3 of 4 games against the Dodgers to pad their lead. The opener on Thursday was a matchup of all-star pitchers but it became a rout quickly as the Bucs scored 6 runs off of Mickey Haefner (11-8, 2.76) in the first inning and cruised to an 11-2 win behind a complete game 8-hitter from Cliff Melton (17-3, 2.42). Bob Elliott had 4 hits to lead the attack and rookie outfielder Ralph Kiner hit his second career homer, and his first since May 18th.

Kiner did not wait long for his third homer as he hit it the next night to help Pittsburgh to a 9-5 victory. Kiner, Arky Vaughan and Dick Siebert each had 3 hits for the winners. Saturday's affair was a wild game. Pittsburgh scored 3 times in the bottom of the 8th to take a 7-6 lead only to have Brooklyn plate 5 in the top of the 9th. The Bucs answered with 4 of their own in the home half to tie the game and then won it on a Frankie Gustine single in the bottom of the 10th after Bill Elliott had doubled to lead off the inning. Brooklyn avoided the embarassment of a sweep with a 9-3 win yesterday.

The third place Cardinals took 3 of 4 from Chicago to remain in third place, 6 games back. The 4th place Reds swept four games
from Philadelphia and now are 7.5 games off the pace. Joe Medwick of the Reds was named NL player of the week after hitting .563 (9-for-16) with 6 rbi's in the 4 games. Medwick is riding an 11-game hitting streak.

RED SOX INCH CLOSER TO FIRST PLACE SENATORS
The Boston Red Sox have moved to within 1 game of first place Washington in the American League. The Red Sox split a 4-game set with the hapless White Sox in Fenway while the Senators were dropping 3 of 4 to the Browns at Sportsman's Park in St Louis. Johnny Pesky had a big series for the Red Sox and he was rewarded with the American Player of the Week Award. The 26 year old infielder hit .438 with a homer and 3 rbi's.

A 5-game series in New York against the Yankees is whats ahead for Boston while the Senators have one more against the Browns before returning home for a 4-game set with Chicago. After that Boston and Washington go head-to-head in the nation's capital for a 3-game set beginning next Sunday.

WEILAND JOINS 300 WIN CLUB
Bob Weiland of the Detroit Tigers became the 18th member of the 300-victory club when he was credited with the victory in Saturday's game against Cleveland. Weiland pitched just 1/3 of an inning in relief but was given the win after a Tiger rally. The 40 year old has five 20-win seasons to his credit and pitched a no-hitter in 1935. He is 5-2 this season working mainly out of the
bullpen.

Weiland began his career with the White Sox in 1929 but was dealt to the Athletics in July of his rookie year. He was moved to the Tigers in 1932 and has remained with Detroit ever since. He was named AL pitcher of the year in 1938 when he went 26-11.
He has also made 7 all-star teams and won 3 gold gloves.

NFL 1946 SEASON PREVIEW - Part 2
Last week TSN previewed the North Divisions of both the NFC and AFC. This week we turn our attention to the East.

AFC EAST PREVIEW
BUFFALO BILLS -The Bills were the only AFC East club to finish above .500. The Bills won their first playoff game in franchise history before losing to eventual league champion Baltimore in the AFC title game. Running back Michael Williams is the key to the Buffalo offense. The two-time AFC 2nd team allstar rushed for 1706 yards a year ago and has topped the 1000 yard mark each of his four seasons in the league. Defensive lineman Julian Hughes leads the defense, which was suspect at times last year. Hughes was Defensive MVP last year for the second time in his career. To be a serious contender the Bills need to upgrade at the QB position and in the defensive backfield. The first round pick was used on safety Stephen Whitehead from North Carolina State who should help the defense.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS - The 7-9 Pats rely on a punishing running game with Mario Glenn (1618 yards) following bruising blockers Andre Ellis and Derrick Elling. With the selection of tackle Dewitt Coulter out of Army this season the Pats offensive line will be even stronger. A healthy Bob Irwin could make a big difference this year. The Pats signal caller missed half the season
year ago with various injuries.

MIAMI DOLPHINS - Dolphins fans had to put up with a second straight losing season from the 6-10 Dolphins. Defense was the
weak spot but surprisingly the Dolphins focused on the offensive side of the ball in the draft. Most experts felt WR Hugh Vick out of Michigan was a real reach at 7th overall. The Dolphins brass feels Vick would be a perfect compliment to second year QB Woody Brooks. Brooks, the ex-UCLA star, started every game of his rookie season and he did improve as the year wore on. Running Back Stacey Jolley had another 1000 yard rushing season, making it 3 in a row for the 7th round pick out of Louisville in 1943. Ryan Burns is one of the best tight ends in the league. Lots of talent on offense. Unfortunately for the Dolphins there is little talent on the other side of the ball.

NEW YORK JETS - If you could combine the Jets defense and the Dolphins offense you would have a great team. New York, aside from 3rd year RB Steve *Van Buren, has little talent on offense. The o-line in particular is among the worst in the league. Third year QB Keith Reeves could eventually be a star - if he lives long enough. Reeves was sacked 75 times over his first two seasons with the Jets. There is a lot of talent on defense and if the offense can put things together the Jets could be a force, but with the offensive line they have it is highly unlikely.
