NFC NORTH PREVIEW
CHICAGO BEARS - The Bears finished 13-3 and were NFC champions a year ago before getting blow out in a lopsided championship game loss to Baltimore. Led by QB Sid *Luckman the best offense in the NFL placed 6 players on the first or second All-NFC team. In addition to Luckman, who had the league's best QB rating, WR Ken *Kavanaugh, TE Dedric Darby, tackle Joe *Strydahr, WR Matt Sikahema and guard George *Musso made the all-pro team. The defense, led by ex-Michigan lineman Bill *Hewitt, is solid.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS - The Vikings finished the regular season tied with Chicago at 13-3 but were upset at home by Carolina in the divisional playoff game. Minnesota relies on workhorse rookie running back Gene Szott, who rushed for 1513 yards a year ago. The defense is among the best in the conference and was led by defensive rookie of the year Ruben Taylor and veteran linebacker Manch Jackson. The Vikings traded out of the first round but used a high second round pick on QB Jim Elliott from South Carolina. Elliott will probably need a year or two to grow into the job but he could end up being the steal of the draft.

GREEN BAY PACKERS - The Packers are a balanced club but just don't have the talent to compete with the Bears and Vikings. RB Tony *Canadeo, a former league MVP, rushed for 1687 yards and WR Don *Hutson made 92 catches. QB Ceicl *Isbell is steady but not a franchise QB. The Packers drafted Stanford QB Jordan Montana (perhaps a relative of you know who) in the third round and he looked good in mini-camp but for now the job belongs to Isbell. Linebacker Bulldog *Turner is the best of an average defense.

DETROIT LIONS - Some things never change. The Lions were 3-13 in 1945 and ranked dead last in defense and 31st in offense. However, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. . QB Bob *Waterfield was selected 4th overall a year ago and he looked good in 8 starts as a rookie. To protect their franchise QB the Lions used the first overall pick on tackle Lou *Groza. The future appears bright for Detroit. . Unfortunately the future is definately not now.

CAMPBELL REPLACES DUTTON AS NHL PRESIDENT
Clarence Campbell was named president of the National Hockey League just a few months after he had been hired as outgoing boss Mervyn "Red" Dutton's assistant. Dutton announced his resignation at the league's summer meeting in Montreal last week and Campbell was a unanimous choice to take over.

Born in Fleming, Saskatchewan in 1905, Campbell was an outstanding student and avid sportsman in his youth. In 1924 he graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in law and arts and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University in the United Kingdom. During this period he studied refereeing and worked several hockey and lacrosse matches in Europe.

He returned to Canada after six years at Oxford when the country was in the throngs of the Great Depression. He took a low paying job with an Edmonton law firm and officiated for the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA).

Clarence Campbell's proficiency as a referee attracted NHL officials and he was hired by NHL president Frank Calder at the start of the 1936 season. He quickly established himself as one of the better referees in the league. By the spring of 1937, he was assigned to the Stanley Cup semifinals between the Red Wings and Canadiens. He was the referee the night Howie Morenz's career came to an end as a result of a broken leg on January 28, 1937.

Campbell enlisted as a private in the Canadian Army in 1940 but quickly rose through the ranks until he ended up commanding the 4th Armored Division. In 1945 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In the aftermath of the war he was appointed the prosecution lawyer for the Canadian War Crimes Commission at the Nuremberg trial of Nazi Kurt Meyer, convicted of executing innocent Canadian prisoners-of-war. Campbell was awarded the Order of the British Empire and made King's Counsel.

CELTICS AND KNICKERBOCKERS FORMED - BAA OFFICIALLY HAS FOUR MEMBERS
The newly formed Basketball Association of America has now officially grown to four teams. Last week the league unvieled plans to have as many as 13 teams ready to play by November. Two teams, the Philadelphia Warriors and Washington Capitols, officially committed and even signed a few players and, in Washington's case a coach as high school coach Red Aurebach inked a deal with the Caps.

This week two more teams officially announced their membership and nicknames. The Boston club will be known as the Celtics while Madison Square Garden officially announced it's team would be known as the Knickerbockers. The Celtics nickname choice was designed to garner immediate interest from city's large Irish population. The Knickerbockers name traces it's origin back to the Dutch settlers who came to the New World - and in particular to what is now called New York - in the 1600's. It specifically refers to the style of pants the settlers wore, pants that rolled up just below the knee, which became known as "knickerbockers".

"The name came out of a hat," explained Garden Executive Fred Podesta. "We were all sitting in the office one day -- Irish, (public relations director) Lester Scott and a few others on the staff. We each put a name in the hat, and when we pulled them out, most of them said Knickerbockers, after Father Knickerbocker, the symbol of New York City."

Several other teams are expected to officially join the league next week. In all, 13 cities made a $1,000 deposit for a franchise at the league meeting 2 weeks ago.
