What he's saying is that this isn't the first time we've seen this. If you came aboard in 2003, you didn't see this in 2002 (where it happened, and the discussion was along these lines).
For those who haven't been around as long, one may feel that, well, as your post came across, the OOTP online league world is crumbling (although you did say your leagues are fine, it comes off a bit as your leagues are the only ones left standing).
Simply put...when a new game comes out, a lot of leagues will form. Just the way it is. And 90% of those leagues will fold, for a variety of reasons. We haven't "reached our limits"; it's just a lot of people don't realize what they're getting into when taking on a new league, and bite off more than they can chew.
Cooley is right, however, when he says that the best leagues will stick. I think it's more true to say the more stable leagues will stick...but that depends on how stability fits into your definition of "best".
