July 1933
This was one of the most active months the league has seen in some time. First off, the A's won only 7 games the entire month. That allowed the rest of the league to climb out of the 12.5-game hole they had dug themselves into. The White Sox went 15-11 and are now just 5 games back. To their credit, the A's lost their #3 starter
Ahrend "Professor" Nagel and their star centerfielder
Ben "Rabbi" Baum to injury, but that hardly excuses their terrible performance. Despite their July collapse, no other AL team has truly taken full advantage of the opportunity.
In the NL, the Phillies and Cubs continue to duke it out, with Philadelphia finishing the month on top by 1 game. This happened despite the fact that the Phillies offense has the lowest batting average (.263) and has scored the fewest runs in the majors. They still have the best pitching staff around with a major league best 3.22 ERA. However, the Cubs pitching staff is ranked 2nd with a 3.31 ERA, and their offense has scored the 4th most runs in the majors, even though their team average of .273 is only 8th. With those numbers, one would think the Cubs had the edge.
Along with the A's Nagle and Baum, several key players were injured this month, namely Giants second baseman
Bobby "Tree" Martin, Brooklyn ace
Frank Smith, Red Sox ace
Babe Goodrum and Phillies outfielder
Don Stirn. Despite his injury, Goodrum was involved in a trade as the league saw the highest number of July trades in recent memory. Goodrum was dealt across town to the Braves. In return, the Red Sox got oft-injured and much-maligned pitcher
Whiskey Allen Jr. Junior was well-known among Braves fans for his career of underachieving. However, the 32-year-old Allen is coming off back-to-back strong seasons in which he has won 42 games. This season, he is just 6-6 after missing more time with injuries, but he has a solid 2.98 ERA, and he posted a 1.90 ERA in July.
By making this trade, the Braves have essentially called it quits this season. It has been an utter disaster for them. After being predicted by many to win the pennant, they have not been above .500 and have lost all of their starting pitchers at one time or another to injury. After trading Allen and
"Jersey" Piccininno, 3 of their current 4 starting pitchers were not even on the team on Opening Day. Even though Goodrum is out until late September with an elbow injury, the team thought acquiring him was worth the risk. At age 29, he is younger than Allen and he has a lot of potential. As for Piccininno, he was shipped back to the Giants, where he started his career. In return, the Braves acquired veteran third baseman
Steve Varghese. Some say Piccininno and pitching prospect
Dan Volpe was a steep price to pay for Varghese, who is on the downside of his career, but the Braves have not had a strong third baseman for many years and
Lonnie Mitchell was hitting just .242 there this season.
In other big trades, the Cubs practically stole 25-year-old pitcher
Jimmie Northup from the Giants for 24-year-old second baseman
Pepper Creighton, who is likely not even starter material. Northup, on the other hand, won 22 games just two seasons ago. Detroit traded longtime star second baseman
Kid Fite to the Red Sox in return for pitcher
Sam Vidas and two prospects. The Tigers then went out and got slugging centerfielder
Fred "Froggy" Borgert from the Giants in return for three prospects. The A's strengthened their rotation with the acquisition of young pitcher
Abraham Dickens, who was acquired from the Browns for an outfield prospect.

Ancestors:
George "The General" Ward, RF, Braves - Ward hit .375 in 15 games after returning to the lineup. His .401 average no longer qualifies for the batting race because of the time he missed. If he remains healthy, he should qualify by the end of the season.
Sam Kass, CF, Pirates - Kass hit .316 with 13 RBI and 14 runs scored.
Ben "Rabbi" Baum, CF, Athletics - Ben hit .328 in 17 games. He returned to the lineup on July 4th, but he herniated a disk in his back late in the month and will likely be out until early September.
Will Miller, LF, Senators - Will hit .258 with 6 steals in 24 games after returning. He is now 8 steals shy of becoming just the 2nd player in history with 800 stolen bases, and he needs just 10 more to become 1st all-time in that category!
Levi "Tyke" Walls, SS, Giants - Tyke hit .315 with 14 runs scored and 7 steals.
David "Pops" McAuliffe, 3B, Cubs - Pops hit .255 with 12 RBI and 13 runs scored.
August "Fat Gus" Kahle, 3B, Yankees - Gus missed about a week this month with another injury, but he hit .507 with 17 RBI in 19 games!
Kid Fite, 2B, Red Sox - Kid hit .309 with 2 homeruns, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored. On July 30th, he was traded to the Red Sox after 12 seasons in Detroit.
Donald "Duckie" Andrews, 2B, Indians - Duckie hit just .195, dropping his season average to .298.
Salvatore "The Sicilian Saucer" Rossi, 1B, Athletics - Sal hit .318 with 2 homeruns, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored.
Harry Finley, C, Yankees - Harry hit .230 with 4 steals.
Ahrend "The Professor" Nagel, SP, Athletics - Nagel went 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA in 3 starts before injuring his arm. He should return in mid-August. One more win and he will pass "Nasty Ned" Fargo for the most wins by an ancestor.
Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Red Sox - Junior went 3-2 with a 1.90 ERA and a shutout. On July 31st, he was traded to the Red Sox for pitcher Babe Goodrum. This was a parting of the ways that had been predicted about 5 years ago.
Otto "Kaiser" Kahle, SP, Braves - Otto went 4-2 with a 1.65 ERA and 1 shutout. He started the season as the ace of a great pitching staff, but now that staff is in disarray.
David Wickersham, SP, Cubs - David went 4-2 with a 3.60 ERA.
Adolf "The Human Torch" Greisbach, SS, Tigers - Adolf hit .341 with 10 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Ricardo "Tiny" Bowden, SS, Red Sox - Tiny hit .449 with 3 homeruns, 18 RBI, 21 runs scored and 8 steals. He was named the AL BOTM.
Keith "Dead-Eye" Laverick, 1B, Cardinals - Keith hit .356 with 2 homeruns and 11 RBI.
Frank Smith, SP, Dodgers - Frank went 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA in 3 starts before herniating a disk in his back. He should return in another week.
F.X. Ditty, 2B, Dodgers - Ditty hit .320 with 7 runs scored.
Dewey Mickelsen, LF, Cubs - Dewey hit .241 with 7 RBI.

Jeronimo Arsenault, SP, Browns - Jeronimo went 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 2 starts after returning.

William "Bill" Berry, RF, Indians - Bill hit .270 with 14 runs scored.
Bobby "Tree" Martin, 2B, Giants - Martin hit .235 in 20 games, but he should miss all of August with a torn groin muscle.
Walt "Pops" Gustafson, SP, Red Sox - Walt went 3-1 with a 3.52 ERA over 5 games (3 starts). On July 19th, he threw the first shutout of his career, and it was a doosy. He allowed just 1 run and 2 walks that day against the Browns. However, with the acquisition of Whiskey Allen Jr., Walt was returned to the bullpen.
Trent "Whacker" Roberts, SP, Indians - Roberts went 1-2 with a 3.43 ERA.
Tequila Allen, 3B, Red Sox - Allen returned and hit .218 in 14 games. He is, however, excited to see his half-brother Whiskey Jr. on the team.
