The Browns went just 12-14 in June but again managed to remain on top of the AL. The A's went 20-8 and have exploded into a tie with Washington for 2nd Place. With the Yankees and White Sox still slumping, there are now 5 teams within 3.5 games of each other atop the league.

The Phillies busted out with a 21-8 record this month, which shotputted them to the top of the NL. Boston went just 13-14, and they fell into a 2nd place tie with Cincinnati at 3 games back. With the Reds and Dodgers hanging tough, the top four NL teams are separated by just 4 games. It looks like both leagues will have good pennant races this year.

With the Indians desperately trying to rebuild their pitching staff, they traded heavy hitting outfielder Jeff Tiptmann to the Cubs for young pitcher Tom "The Octopus" Mierhofer and a minor league pitching prospect. Mierhofer gained his nickname in his rookie season because his Chicago teammates said his gangly arms and flailing pitching motion reminded them of the eight-armed sea creature. The Cubs then lost last month's POTM David Wickersham until early August with an arm injury. They already had their #2 starter Alex Winterhalter out with sholder woes. However, they felt they needed offensive help to really compete for the pennant, but with 3 of their top 4 opening day starters injured or traded, they are quickly falling out of the race.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Kid Fite, 2B, Detroit Tigers - He hit .381 with an unbelievable 10 homeruns, 25 RBI, 22 runs scored and 6 steals! With 18 homeruns on the season, he has already tied a career high with half the season yet to go.

NL - Keith Laverick, 1B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .420 with 4 homeruns, 25 RBI and 26 runs scored. Depite the fact that the Cardinals are 13 games back and in 5th Place, they have had all 3 NL BOTM this season.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Punchy" Cote, Philadelphia Athletics - He was 5-0 with a 2.38 ERA and 2 shutouts.

NL - Scott Fenner, Philadelphia Phillies - He was 6-1 with a 1.73 ERA and a shutout. He is 15-1 on the season and did not lose his first game until June 23rd against the Cardinals!
