OOTP Chatroom Info (with tutorial)

Since at least some people want it and Steve gave the go-ahead, here's a tutorial for getting into the #ootp chatroom.

Please note that the chatroom is unofficial and not endorsed by OOTP Developments.

If you know what you're doing with your IRC client of choice, just find your way to #OOTP on DALnet.

The rest of this tutorial is written under the assumption that the reader has never used IRC or is extremely unfamiliar with it. As such, it may seem overly simplistic to some people, but I hope that all basic questions are answered.

Using mIRC
1. Pick up and install an IRC client. The most popular (and, in my opinion, easiest) is mIRC, which can be found at that link.

2. Fill in the basics. When you open mIRC, a window titled 'mIRC Options' should be open. Click on 'Connect' if it is not already selected. For Full Name and Email Address, put whatever you like. A nickname is required, as well; you can use your handle on the OOTP boards or pick something else.

3. Connect to DALnet. In the 'mIRC Options' window, click on 'Servers,' under 'Connect.' Under 'IRC Network,' scroll down to and select DALnet. Under 'IRC Server,' select the DALnet server closest to your location. Click the 'Connect to Server' button.

4. Join the room. Once you connect to the server, you should find yourself in the 'Status' window. In the text entry box at the bottom, type "/join #ootp" without the quotes. You should be in the room!

More in-depth IRC tutorials can be found here, here, or with a Google search.

Using Trillian (Courtesy of Long_Long_Name)
1. Open the Connection Manager.

2. Select "Add", then "IRC".

3. From the list on the left, double-click "DALnet".

4. Select a server.

5. Enter a username, nickname and alternate nickname.

6. Click on "create and connect".

7. From the IRC menu, select "Join Channel".

8. In the box, enter "#ootp".

9. You should be in the chat room.
_____________

To see if you're really connected, select "Toggle Status Window" from the IRC menu. That will give you connection informations.

If connection fails, try another server under "DALnet" at #4. It can take several servers before actually working. I had to enter one that wasn't on the list myself... hotspeed.sg.as.dal.net on port 6667.

If you have any issues connecting or with anything IRC-related, reply to this post, find me in the chatroom, or PM me.

-Mike

(EDIT: Included LLN's Trillian tutorial)
