A couple of reasons.
One - I was brand new to online leagues, much less being a commissioner, so I did even realize how big of a security breach it was to do that.
Two - I worked from two different computers, so that I could run the league from both work and home. When I was finished I would upload the new changes, and then the next time I needed to make changes I would download the file again if necessary.
