WEB PAGES UPDATED...

June 1931

The Yankees continue to dominate the AL after going 20-6 in May. They have pushed their winning percentage above .700, and with the Tigers mired in a 10-game losing streak, they now have a commanding 12.5 game lead.

Despite missing 2 of their top 3 pitchers, the Braves held on to the NL lead. They were just 15-12, but their rotation is now intact. However, they lost one of their top hitters, leftfielder John Schmeider, until September with a badly dislocated shoulder. No matter how good their pitching, the two-time defending World Champion Phillies cannot seem to get fully on track, thanks largely to a .264 team batting average and only the 13th most runs scored in the majors. They remain in striking distance, however, at just 5 games back. The Reds remained in second place after going 16-13, but the Pirates had the best month in the NL, going 18-9 and moving into 4th place.

Phillies catcher Willard Schwarz became the 3rd player to collect 200 homeruns when he hit one against the Cubs on June 15th. He is just 33 homers behind teammate and current all-time leader John Falise. With the increased homerun production of this modern generation, it looks like there will be many more sluggers to join the 200 homerun club in the near future.

For the first time in major league history, two brothers have appeared together on an offensive leaderboard. Detroit's slugging first baseman Quenton Misisca currently leads the AL with 18 homeruns. His brother Maurice, a rookie third baseman for the White Sox, is 3rd in the AL with 10 longballs at the young age of 18. Quenton, the eldest of 9 kids and 12 years older than Maurice, set an AL record for 28 homers in his first full season (1925), only to have it broken the next season. The AL record for homeruns by a rookie is 15, and young Maurice, who hit 6 of his 10 homers in June alone, could be en route to setting a new rookie standard.

Pitchers of the Month:

NL - Frank Smith, Brooklyn Robins - He was 3-1 with a 1.72 ERA.
