May, 1928
The Tigers went 18-9 and maintained their lead over the AL, but their margin of dominance has dwindled to just a half game. The Athletics were on fire in May, going 22-6 and moving into 2nd place. While the Yankees collapsed and even the Senators slid below .500, the White Sox went 16-11 and are just 4 games back.
In a shocking move, the A's traded their #3 starting pitcher
Arden Killbreath to rival Detroit. In return, the A's received shortstop
Marcus Sargeant, who is hitting .329 on the season. They also received a minor league pitcher and catcher. The A's felt like the weakest spot in their lineup was SS, but tradnig away Killbreath was a huge shock. That puts added pressure on
Davie "Nightmare" Kendrick as the #3 starter. He has a lifetime 5.66 ERA. And now 25-year-old
Richard Isaac will be pressed into action as the 4th starter despite not starting a game since 1926.
Darrell Brewer is a potential 4th starter, but top prospect
Alex Winterhalter is the team's future in the rotation, but he is not quite ready now.
The Braves went 16-10 in May, and behind the finally-dominant duo of the Allen brothers, they kept their lead over the NL. The Cardinals went 14-13 and slipped to 3 games back, but they held fast in 2nd place, because the Giants had the same 14-13 record, while the Phillies stumbled down to a 24-24 record overall. Philadelphia's vaunted pitching staff has been surprisingly average.
