Its probably a combination of these factors.
It could be somewhat a fluke, 30 games isn't enough to judge the entire performance on.
Spring Training points are essentially blocks of time spent devoted to training the skill, 5 of these blocks is the minimum time to maintain the current skill level, more than this could increase the ability, less than this could hurt the ability.
So by decreasing his contact training in favor of power, you might run into this kind of effect, but it might also be an early season anomaly as well. (I would guess that its some of both)
