Setting the stage for Ali vs Zech

Well, while The Champ and his German upstart opponent to come are getting ready for thier big fight, I'm trying to get a feel for the "mood" of the time. Been doing some surfing on the web about the venue where Ali and Mildenberger fought and was surprised to find a lot of references to Mildenberger on the web!

So I continued to search up on Mildenberger. I'm surprised to see what quite a celebrity he was back then in Germany when he was the European Champion and he continues to be today it would appear. Hmmmm...Mildenberger just might be another interesting replay subject to do along side Folley....

I've tried to do some searching on our man Zech, but not finding much of anything yet. Mildenberger though....found some interesting things.

Here's the web links to some of the more interesting finds on Mildenberger I've run across. Some photo's of him past and present and a little bit about the venue the Ali/Mildenberger fight was staged at. I've seen a couple different references to the venue. 1. Frankfurt's Waldstadion and 2. Frankfort's Forest Stadiums.

Anyway thought you might like to check these out. Going to do a little more search for Gerhard, but, yes the Championship fight I hope to stage here soon...

The first paragraph here is taken from an article done by Cliff Endicott on Cyber Boxing Zone on a review he did of Stephen Brunt's book, Facing Ali.

Far more interesting is the chapter that describes the life of Karl Mildenberger. A national hero in Germany of only slightly less regard than Max Schmelling, Mildenberger's story is very well told. His development as a fighter to the point of his match with Ali for the title in 1966 is described in a brief but informative story, but the Ali fight itself was the main event of the chapter. I had no idea that this made Mildenberger a legend in Germany, and that Germans consider this particular fight one of the most exciting and important fights in heavyweight history. Mildenberger plays on this in his everyday life, making him a constant presence in the media as a major celebrity.
