BASEBALL'S WINTER MEETINGS - DAY 1

OWNERS DISCUSS FRANCHISE RELOCATIONS
NEW ORLEANS - The baseball owners met in New Orleans this week for the Winter Meetings. Their first topic of dicussion was the notion of franchise relocations.

The last team to move was the Washington Senators to Texas after the 1971 season. Major League owners have little recourse other than to block the moves, after the passage of the "Baseball Bill" in Congress last year. Info on the bill, here

"We're going to be able to reject these flurry of moves, if they are not in the best interest of the game. But I can't see that in these cases," said Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf.

The Oakland A's have an official proposal to move to Portland, Oregon after next season. But one National League team has also submitted a bid to move, rumored to be the Florida Marlins. To exaspeate the situation, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are having stadium problems and have explored the legal ramifications of exiting their stadium lease.
