Week 16
All-star week, and SP Rodrigo Lopez was the only Pirate named to the NL All-star team. The AL won the game in 11 innings by a score of 3-2 and Lopez did not get a chance to pitch in the game. This week the Pirates have a three game series against the New York Mets who are currently 42-53 and whom the Pirates are 2-1 against this season. Jake Joseph (15-3 1.65) is having a career year so far for the Mets but is the only bright spot on an otherwise pretty bleak Mets pitching staff. Cliff Floyd (0.310 15 57) and Dmitri Young (0.287 11 52) are the leaders of an offense that ranks 24th in runs scored.
Game 97: Pirates 5 Mets 3
Another nice start by Lopez as he gives up just three runs, two of them earned, in eight innings of work for the win. Mann was once again 1-2-3 shut them down as he picked up his 27th save of the season. Peeples didn't have too bad of a start, giving up three runs, two earned, in six innings but was not able to pick up a decision. Walker got the loss as he gave up the winning run in the seventh inning.
Game 98: Pirates 1 Mets 2 (11)
A tough loss for the Bucs as this one snapped their 7 game winning streak. VanBenSchoten pitched another great game, giving up one run off of just two hits in seven innings. However, the Pirates offense struggled to score runs, scoring just one run, despite picking up eight hits in eight innings off of starter Phil Seibel. Mann got knocked around in his second inning of work in the bottom of the 11th. He started the inning off by hitting Berwick with a pitch but then got Quinlan to ground out into a fielder's choice. That was the only out he could get as he then gave up a single to Castro, moving Quinlan to third. Quinlan then scored on Wigginton's hit into the gap in right center field. Nakamura picked up the win for the Mets after pitching a scoreless inning.
Game 99: Pirates 6 Mets 5
Williams pitched very well but was taken out after just six innings and giving up just two runs, one of which was earned. The Pirates offense got to starter Jake Joseph, who gave up all six runs in 6 2/3 innings. The Mets tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Vogelsong gave up a two run homerun to Floyd. Jimenez then came into the game and gave up a double to Scutaro and intentionally walked Jason Phillips before being pulled. Gabe White gave up a single to Luke Allen and was pulled from the game with runners at second and third. Mike Williams then came in and got pinch hitter Quinlan to fly out to shallow right-center field and Mike Jacobs to line out to the first baseman to end the threat. Then in the bottom of the ninth, Mann loaded the bases by walking Castro, giving up an infield single to Berwick and then walking Wigginton. He got out of the jam by geting Floyd to line out to first, Scutaro to strike out and then Jason Phillips to fly out to center field for his 28th save.
Around the league, there was no significant news that happened.
