SILVERHAWKS ACQUIRE YAMAGUCHI
Tetsuya Yamaguchi, a free agent starting pitcher from Japan, who played college ball at Division III Loras College in Iowa, was signed today by the Nevada Silverhawks, to a long-term deal. The terms were not disclosed.
Yamaguchi, 23, was technically under contract with the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Japanese League, but did not play for them since he was a college student in the US. He disputed signing the contract with the club, saying he was only 16 when he signed the deal. NCAA officials did not hold the contract binding and allowed him to play a non-scholarship college.
Yamaguchi will be assigned to the Silverhawks Double-A team in Belleville, IL. "We're looking forward to seeing his progress, so he will one day be in Silverhawks grey," said Manager Ryne Sandberg.
The team announced today it hired future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens to work in Spring Training as a consultant and coach to the team's deep, young, pitchers in the minors and majors. "We want to help these young men develop and no one is better to do that than Roger," said Team President Dark Cloud.
The team also signed MR Mike MacDougal and dealt MR Mike Neu for a reliever and minor leaguer.
