Sheff also hasn't played third in 10 years, and even when he did, he wasn't a good one. Sheff's fielding average his last full season as a third baseman makes Mike Lamb look like Graig Nettles.
Signing Lofton wasn't necessarily one of the best moves, as his upgrade in center isn't that much of one compared to Bernie Williams. Personally, I think that the best player on the roster to man center field is going to stand in left this season, in Matsui. He played very good there last season when Bernie was hurt, and showed better range. I felt that Bernie would be good enough for left, Matsui would move over to center, Giambi could DH, and the Yanks could have signed JT Snow to man first with a one year deal. Hell, they could still sign Travis Lee right now. I don't really know why they didn't go after him or Snow (although Snow was happy in SF, I think) instead of Clark. Travis can't be asking for that much, and would have probably accepted a deal similar to that of Clark's to play for the Yanks.
Or maybe not... he'd probably be signed by now if he was looking for realistic numbers.
