Two other things.

I'm still curious to how Jeter reacts to all of this, and how it plays out in spring traininig. Take Gary Sheffield for whatever you will, and he's not exactly a model citizen or boy scout, but I took his offer to play third base as sincere when Boone first went down. I knew (or at least hoped) that the Yankees would pat him on the head, thank him, and ignore him, but he did make it known. Jeter should know where the depth of the team is, and how to make it best. That's what a captain can do. he wants what's best for the team, not what's best for him. What's best for the team is not A-Rod at third and Jeter at short.

That, and I think that when we look back at this many years from now, I think the thing I will remember most is not the announcement, not any appearances A-Rod might make, not Larry Lucchino's bitterness, but Ben Affleck losing his mind and suffering a nervous breakdown on ESPN. I think he mentioned Kenny Lofton's name 37 times.
