I fought as a welterweight in high school, Police Athletic League, Boston area, late 1970s. A natural right-hander, I fought southpaw and jabbed the crap out of unschooled opponents. Decent speed, footwork defense, no power, tendency to cut. Not much of a future. When 147 was no longer tenable (I had a 17-inch neck as a 16-pound welterweight) I gave it up. In my last fight, I took an a heavily muscled Dominican who had no skills but was strong with heavy, heavy hands. He butted me and opened me up good. Swore it off when I got to college.
