Neither Chicago nor Cleveland were able to provide enough of a challenge to Washington as the Senators took the AL pennant with a week left in the season. Washington won 2-of-3 games against the White Sox and Indians early in the month to distance themselves. However, they lost 7 of their last 9 games of the season, including a 3-game sweep by Cleveland, but by then it was too late. Still it is a sad way to enter the franchise's first World Series since 1913.

The NL pennant went down to the final day of the season. Cincinnati led the league for much of the season, but their 8.5 game lead at the end of June slowly dwindled as the weeks went by. The Reds were playing well until a sweep by Brooklyn on September 10-12. After that they lost 8 of their next 10 games including a sweep by the lowly Phillies. By that time, the Giants had snuck into first by a game. New York had struggles of their own this month, but they played much better than the Reds and by the time the final series of the season arrived, all they had to do was win. The Giants did that by taking 2-of-3 from the Phillies and winning the pennant by 1 game. Cincinnati, ever the bride's maid, finished in 2nd place for the 5th time in 12 seasons.

World Series

The Senators are powered by offense. They have a robust .300 team batting average, the best in the majors. They also draw a lot of walks and steal plenty of bases. On the other hand, their pitching staff has actually been one of the most inconsistent in the league. Their 4.74 team ERA is among the worst around. They allow almost no home runs, however, and are around the middle of the pack in allowing walks. Their three starting pitchers, especially team ace "Check Mate" Parkhill, are very capable pitchers, but as I said, they have been inconsistent.

The Giants have the 2nd best team batting average (.296) in baseball and sport the 3rd best team ERA (3.89). The offense hit the most home runs in the league and scored the 2nd most runs. Their pitchers have the 3rd lowest opponents batting average, allowed the 3rd fewest runs and 4th fewest walks. The staff is anchored by two potential aces, Michael McAinsh (11-7, 2.53 ERA) and "Junkyard" Franklin (26-9, 3.04 ERA). Every starter on their offense hit .293 or better this season, and they sport two sluggers among the NL leaders in home runs and RBI - first baseman Jared Jarry (9 HR, 102 RBI) and centerfielder Campbell Ditty (10 HR, 100 RBI).

My Prediction: The Senators have a strong team, but they struggled in September, while the Giants began to heat up. If Washington's pitchers can pitch up to their capabilities, this series could go a long way. However, with their inconsistencies and New York's potency, I expect the Giants to win in 7 games (9 game series).
