NEVILLE STARS DURING 18-RUN WIN IN WORCESTER
SPORTSMAN’S LF HAS FIVE HITS & SEVEN RBI AS VISITORS HAMMER HIGHLANDER

WORCESTER, MASS. (June 28, 1882) - It was an all-Massachusetts affair in the Coastal Conference on Wednesday afternoon, with Highlander taking on Sportsman’s at the Worcester Fairgrounds. However, only one side showed up.

Highlander grabbed the upper hand early, as a five-run rally in B1 gave them a 2-5 lead after the first frame. However, Sportsman’s would score 22 of the afternoon’s last 23 Runs as they responded to that Highlander rally by smashing the ball around the fairgrounds over the next four innings, scoring four times in T2, six in T3, five in T4 and four more times in T5 to turn that 2-5 deficit into a 21-5 lead. From there it was just a matter of filling out the scoresheet.

Sportsman’s clubbed 26 base hits over the course of the game, and they were led by veteran LF Charles Neville.

Neville’s performance was the first so far this season with a 100+ Game Score in the C.C. It was one that could spring some life into Neville’s 1882, as coming into the game he was at a career low in both Average (.269) and OPS (.720). Last season Neville hit .343 with and .851 OPS, and was one of the better Outfielders in the league, so perhaps he’ll return to that form during the second half of 1882.

The victory moved Sportsman’s into a tie for second place in the C.C. with Capitol City at 24-20, both teams three games behind Bridgeport. Highlander is in last place at 17-27 (10 GB).
