Angels Keep Winning, Move Within Two Games of First as September Looms
For much of the past decade, Labor Day signaled the beginning of another long offseason for the Angels. Not this year. With August winding down, the Angels continue to position themselves for what would be the franchise's first postseason appearance since 2014.

Los Angeles took two of three from Cleveland this week to improve to 73-61, moving within two games of the first-place Astros in the American League West. Just as importantly, the Angels now hold a one-game lead over the Rangers for the third and final American League Wild Card berth. Kansas City remains in the hunt but sits 3½ games back of Los Angeles. After spending years chasing relevance, the Angels suddenly control their own destiny.

August 24 — Angels 4, Guardians 2
Alex Bregman reminded everyone why the Angels made him one of their biggest offseason investments. Bregman went 3-for-4, homering, doubling, scoring twice and driving in two runs to pace the offense.

The game featured an outstanding pitching duel. Shane McClanahan was sharp once again, but Cleveland rookie Parker Messick matched him nearly pitch for pitch. Chase DeLauter gave the Guardians an early 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the third inning before the Angels began to chip away. Clarke Schmidt continued one of the strongest stretches of his season. The right-hander worked seven innings, allowing five hits while keeping Cleveland's lineup largely in check. Chandler Simpson gave the Angels an early lead with an RBI single in the fourth before the Guardians tied the game in the sixth. The response was immediate. Nolan Schanuel doubled home the go-ahead run later in the inning, and Christian Moore followed by launching a two-run homer to put Los Angeles ahead 4-1.
