People who had no idea Cushing was dead largely didn't notice anything was strange.
That's a great observation - when you know it's AI, there's a bias.
Another thing to try is this: line up all the photos of a player in your collection and take note. In many cases, the faces can look fairly different across the whole spread, at least to some degree. AI will be no different, even though some images will really ring the bell and others won't.
