PAINTER HAS SIX-HIT DAY IN GREEN MTN. WIN
LEADOFF MAN BATS 6/7 WITH 11 TOTAL BASES IN DRUBBING OF CANTABRIGIANS

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (May 14, 1882) - Green Mountain won four of their first five games to open the 1882 N.B.B.O. season, and with an impressive display at St. Peter’s Field in Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon they took win number five.

The hosts drew first blood in B2, with a Ground Out bringing home the opening Run. The visitors went work, hitting the Cantabrigians with a barrage of Runs over the next three innings to take a 10-3 lead. They secured the result late, following a seventh inning in which both teams scored three times with a five-run rally in T8 that put them ahead 18-7 and removed all doubt as to who would win.

Green Mtn. saw a great effort from third-year RF John Robbins…
GM RF John Robbins: 4/6 (2B), 3 R, 3 RBI, HbP, 5 TB
…but it was their leadoff man, CF Franklin Painter, who ran riot at St. Peter’s and earned Player of the Game honors.
T1: Single past 2B off J. McAllister
T3: Triple to LF off J. McAllister (R)
T4: Reached via Error by 3B (R)
T5: 1-run Double to LF off J. McAllister (R)
T7: Leadoff Triple to LCF off F. Gorsuch (R)
T8: 1-run Single to RF off O. Jackson (R)
T9: Single to RCF off O. Jackson
TOTAL: 6/7 (2B, 2 3B), 5 R, 2 RBI, 11 TB – 93 GmSc
Painter’s day marked the first six-hit performance anywhere in baseball so far in 1882 as well as the first outing with 10+ Total Bases, and it gave him a .484 Average (15/31) at the conclusion of the first week of play in the semi-professional schedule. Coincidentally, John Robbins is also batting .484 (15/31) after the first six games.

The victory left Green Mtn. 5-1 after Week One, while the Cantabrigians are an even 3-3.
