UTICA’S DONAHUE HITS HOMER, PITCHES SHUTOUT
UTICA #2 OPENS 1882 ACCOUNT WITH MEMORABLE OUTING IN BIG WIN vs BINGHAMTON
UTICA, N.Y. (May 10, 1882) - The 26th season of the N.B.B.O. is just two days old and yet it has already seen its first truly memorable performance, which occurred during Utica’s big home victory vs Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon.
This contest was over quickly, with a pair of Runs in B1, five in B2, and two more in B3 giving the hosts a 9-0 lead. Utica tacked on Runs from there, scoring twice in B5 and once in both B6 & B7 while watching Binghamton’s attack struggle, and in the end Utica had themselves a 13-0 Shutout victory to take away from the second game of 1882.
The star of the afternoon at Conkling Field, as implied by Utica’s Shutout win, was Utica #2 Seymour Donahue.• UTI P Seymour Donahue: CG SHO (1-0, 0.00), 9 HA, 0 BB, 2 K However, Donahue also had a big day with the bat that was punctuated by a Home Run in the sixth inning.• B2: Single past 2B off R. Glasser (R)
• B3: Leadoff Single to RCF off R. Glasser (R)
• B4: Single to RF off R. Glasser
• B6: SOLO HOME RUN TO RF off W. Pate
• B8: Fly Out to CF (1 out)
• TOTAL: 4/5 (HR), 3 R, 1 RBI, 7 TB The Home Run was the third of Donahue’s career over nearly 570 Plate Appearances, while the Shutout was the second of his career over the roughly 150 games he’s pitched in for Utica since signing with his only career team ahead of the 1878 season.
While Donahue earned all the plaudits for his tremendous two-way play on Wednesday, he wasn’t the only Utica man to have a fine afternoon at the ballpark.• UTI SS Henry Smith: 5/5 (2B), 3 R, 4 RBI – 89 GmSC Smith’s five-hit game was the third of his career and his first since a 5/7 outing against Columbia on June 24th, 1880. The 30-year-old is hoping that his 5/5 effort will kickstart a campaign that makes up for last season (.274, 49 RBI, 0.8 WAR) and brings him back to the All-Star form that he was in during his first two seasons in the N.B.B.O.
Utica will look to finish the series with a sweep tomorrow afternoon.
