Angels Keep Rolling, Sweep Tigers as Bello Before Cardinals Cool Them Off

July 17: Angels 7, Tigers 5
The marquee pitching matchup featured newly acquired Brayan Bello making his Angels debut opposite Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, but it was the Angels' offense that stole the show early. Los Angeles erupted for five runs in the first two innings, chasing Skubal into an unfamiliar early deficit. Alex Bregman's two-run single highlighted a four-run second inning that gave the Angels a commanding 5-1 advantage. Jhonkensey Noel continued his torrid stretch since arriving in Anaheim, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, two singles and two RBIs. His power has transformed the middle of the Angels' lineup and provided another example of why the front office believed he could become an impact bat.

Bello showed flashes of why the Angels targeted him but also displayed some understandable rust in his first start with his new club. The right-hander allowed four runs over 4⅔ innings, battling through traffic before turning the game over to the bullpen. From there, the bullpen held firm. Mason Montgomery earned his first victory as an Angel, while Dylan Lee recorded his first save with the club, preserving a 7-5 victory.

July 18: Angels 3, Tigers 1
One night after the offense carried the club, Clarke Schmidt took center stage. The right-hander turned in one of his finest starts of the season, allowing one run on just two hits over 6⅓ innings while striking out five and walking none to improve to 7-7.

With the score tied at one in the fifth inning, Chandler Simpson lined an RBI single to put the Angels ahead for good. Ben Joyce closed out the victory for his 20th save of the season.

July 19: Angels 6, Tigers 1
The Angels completed a convincing three-game sweep behind an outstanding performance from Logan Allen. Allen tossed six shutout innings, allowing only three hits while striking out eight and walking three. It was one of his sharpest starts of the year and gave the Angels exactly what they needed against one of the American League's best clubs.

The offense gave him plenty of support immediately. Los Angeles erupted for five runs in the first inning, chasing Detroit into an early hole. Alex Bregman started the scoring with an RBI double before Nolan Schanuel and Christian Moore each ripped two-run doubles later in the inning. The early outburst proved more than enough as the Angels cruised to a 6-1 victory, completing the sweep.

July 20: Angels 5, Cardinals 2
The Angels carried their momentum into St. Louis, where rookie Caden Dana delivered the finest start of his young major league career. Dana worked 5⅔ innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five and walking two. His outing ended when Ivan Herrera connected for a solo home run in the fifth inning.

The Angels broke the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs before adding an insurance run in the seventh. Austin Wells paced the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, continuing his outstanding first season in Anaheim.

The victory pushed Los Angeles to within 2½ games of first place in the American League West.

July 21: Cardinals 2, Angels 1
Reid Detmers deserved a better fate after holding the Cardinals to just four hits, but the Angels stranded nine runners as Ixan Henderson and three St. Louis relievers repeatedly escaped trouble. Despite putting runners on base throughout the evening, Los Angeles could never deliver the timely hit it needed, falling 2-1 as its four-game winning streak came to an end.

July 22: Cardinals 6, Angels 4
The Cardinals secured the series by capitalizing on another difficult outing from Brayan Bello. The Angels grabbed an early 2-0 lead when Austin Wells launched a two-run home run in the first inning, but St. Louis answered with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth. The decisive blow came off the bat of Ivan Herrera, whose three-run homer highlighted the third-inning rally. Bello had largely pitched well to that point, but the Cardinals quickly turned the game around with a series of timely hits.

The Angels mounted a late rally by scoring twice in the eighth inning but couldn't draw any closer, falling 6-4. The loss dropped Los Angeles to 4½ games behind Texas in the American League West.

Still in the Fight
With more than two months remaining, the Angels remain firmly in the playoff race and have demonstrated they can compete with the American League's best clubs. The next challenge will be responding after their first adversity since the break.
