With an 8-4 victory over the Washington Nationals, the Kansas City Royals have sewn up their second straight American League Central Division title and a third straight trip to the postseason.
At 92-67, the Royals sit five games ahead of the Detroit Tigers in the division with three games left on the schedule.
Kansas City leads the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners by two games for the best record in the American League.
The Philadelphia Phillies, who lead the National League East Division, possess the best record in MLB at 96-63.
The Royals were in the World Series a year ago, falling to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Kansas City's last World Series win was back in 2015, when they defeated the New York Mets.
