Season Awards
Batting Champion – Philadelphia RF Desmond Starks (.356) won the award in the east, finishing well ahead of nearest rivals, Boston 1B Domingo Vargas (.331) and defending batting champ, Tampa Bay 3B Rusty McCormick (.329). The western league title was claimed by Seattle LF Juan Marin (.366) who easily held off teammate SS Cesar Sanchez (.336) to win his first batting title.
Homerun Champion – the EL title was won by Indianapolis 3B Xavier Cisneros (36) who held off NY 1B Jerry Wright (34) and Charlotte’s veteran LF Rob Penney (33). The chase for the WL title was won by Seattle catcher Felix Beltran with 39 homers, five more than nearest rival Denver LF John Wilkins (34).
Outstanding Hitter – Philadelphia RF Desmond Starks (.356, 26 HR, 119 RBI, 38 SB) won the award in a landslide in the east while the WL award was taken just as comfortably by Seattle’s star catcher Felix Beltran (.303, 39 HR, 149 RBI).
Outstanding Pitcher – the EL award was taken comfortable by Chicago’s Glenn Owens (19-8, 3.17 ERA), the only other pitcher to receive first place votes was NO’s Brady Hoover (17-10, 2.98 ERA). In the west a career year for Dallas pitcher Ray Phillips (22-11, 2.74 ERA) gave him the award ahead of Seattle’s Jorge Romero (17-5, 3.34 ERA) and Houston’s Chris McAndrew (17-10, 3.92 ERA)
Rookie of the Year – the EL award went to New York’s Joe Baker (.317, 14 HR, 60 RBI) although if Washington’s 21-year-old LF Antonio Cordero (.311, 12 HR, 46 RBI) hadn’t got injured the result may have looked different. In the west the voting was just as close with Dallas 2B Oliver Black (.332, 10 HR, 66 RBI) taking the award ahead of former teammate, Seattle RF Scott Lewis (.314, 21 HR, 70 RBI).
Manager of the Year – controversy surrounded the EL award with Philadelphia manager Will Thompson being named MOY ahead of New York’s Matt Tate, many observers felt Tate deserved the award for leading New York to a second consecutive Atlantic division crown and a World Series appearance. In the west there was only ever going to be one winner, Seattle’s Luis Chavez for leading the Pioneers to a World Series triumph in just his first year in charge.
Glove Wizards EL – P -David Salas (NY) C – Alessandro Sighel (IND) 1B – Ricardo Cardenas (CLE) 2B – Salvador Ramos (CHI) 3B – Marimo Acosta (DET) SS – Justin Thomas (MIA) LF – Liam Hawkins (NY) CF – Hunter Jones (NY) RF – Spencer Horn (DET)
Glove Wizards WL – P –Rob Smith (AUS) C – Raul Sanchez (OKC) 1B – Jesus Diaz (SF) 2B – Oliver Black (SEA/DAL) 3B – Curt Carver (SJ) SS – Bastien Brioso (OMH) LF – Fernando Diaz (OKC) CF – Dave Jackson (OKC) RF – Stu Leach (LA)
Interesting Facts – Charlotte 1B Pete Daniels hit two Walk-Off Grand-Slams during the season, his first was on May 8th against Washington and the second was against Atlanta on September 9th. Cleveland’s lack of team speed helped them set several dubious records for the season, they hit just 7 triples as a team while also stealing only 22 bases, both new NABL lows.
Seattle were taken to a deciding game in every one of their playoff series (game 5 v OKC in divisional series, game 7 v SJ in the WLCS and game 7 v NY in the World Series) becoming the first team to have won three series deciding games in a single playoff run. The only other team to have played three series deciding games in a single postseason was the Atlanta Flames who lost the World Series to Denver at the end of their 2023 run.
