In the past
The live missions have always (since I've been playing) rewarded you with a lower-level card and a pack from that team for the first 20 and a better card and better pack for the second mission (which used to be just 26 rather than all or nearly all of the launch cards). So after the may drop you could complete the 20-missions, sell the toppers you received, and have enough to complete the full team mission (in the days when that was 26).
A few years ago they switched to the current all or nearly all for the 2nd mission, which made them harder to complete. And now you get artifact packs and ballparks, which generate no cash for you unless you pull a variant card where applying your artifact cards to the boost will make it something that someone will pay 15K or more to own. So the full mission tree will probably take casual teams until late June to complete.
I have several times suggested that, in addition to adding low-level cards to the live missions as the players appear, the historical missions should also have low-level cards added to them after a couple of months so that even casual teams can aspire to owning one or two of the top cards when they come out in December.
As the situation is now, your best strategy with a casual team is to just make sure you own all (and I do mean all) of the live cards after the end of the season, so you will at least get all the PT Elite series. Doing that will give you a small window of opportunity to get almost any team to the low Diamond level.
