2041 World Baseball Championship (Part 2)

The playoff field for the 2041 World Baseball Championship was filled with many of the usual suspects. Of the top 15 teams by all-time points, 11 were represented in this 16 team group. Even more notable, of the 24 nations to win a world title, 14 of them were in the 2041 Round Robin. Only Ecuador and Australia hadn’t won it all, with even smaller countries like Austria and Romania pulling off surprise title runs.

In Group A, China was unbeaten at 6-0. Ecuador also advanced at 3-3 with both Russia (2-4) and Romania (1-5) ousted. Spain sat atop Group B at 4-2, while both South Korea and Australia were 3-3 and Germany was 2-4. The Koreans advanced on the differential tiebreaker at +2, having beaten the Germans 4-0 and lost 4-2. Group C saw Mexico (5-1) and Austria (4-2) advancing and both Japan (2-4) and Brazil (1-5) eliminated. And in Group D, the United States (5-1) and France (4-2) moved forward whilst England (3-3) and Canada (0-6) got the boot.

China flattened South Korea with 6-1 and 15-2 quarterfinal wins. Although this earned the 20th final four appearance for the Chinese, they hadn’t gotten this far in 25 years dating back to their 2016 world title. Spain swept Ecuador on 5-4 and 8-3 wins, the former needing a three-run, two-homer ninth inning for a walkoff. It was the seventh semifinal trip for the Spaniards, who most recently finished fourth in 2038.

France ousted Mexico on 5-2 and 3-1 wins to earn their eighth appearance in the final four. The French last did it with back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2026-27. And the United States defeated Austria 4-2 and 7-1, the latter surprisingly a ten-inning game with a six-run tenth by the Americans. The US has been a semifinalist 64 times and was looking for their eighth consecutive finals appearance.

The big upset saw France not only defeat the United States, but sweep them in the semifinal. The French won 5-4, 6-2, and 5-3 and earned their fourth championship berth, ending the Americans’ finals streak. Spain won their opener 4-1 over China, but the Chinese grabbed 4-1, 4-2, and 4-2 wins to take the series 3-1. It was the 13th championship berth for China to end a 24-year drought.
