2041 World Baseball Championship (Part 1)



The 2041 World Baseball Championship was the 95th edition of the event and hosted in Hanoi, Vietnam with the Vietnamese as the defending world champ. In Division 1, Canada prevailed at 14-4 by holding off an upstart Sri Lanka at 13-5. This was the 43rd time the Canadians advanced, second-most behind the United States. It was also back-to-back berths for the Canadians. It was an impressive run for the Sri Lankans, whose first-ever appearance came with the expansion in 2038.

The Americans dominated Division 2 at 15-3 with Iran a distant second place at 11-7. The US moved forward for the 73rd time and was the runner-up last year, having won six straight titles before that. The Americans have advanced in 12 consecutive years. China rolled Division 3 at 16-2 with a long gap to second place Poland at 12-6. The Chinese advanced for the 33rd time and the second time in three years.

Japan dominated Division 4 at 16-2, well beyond their closest foes Cuba and Turkey at 11-7. The Japanese moved forward for the 30th time overall and the 11th time since 2027. Spain crushed Division 5 at 16-2 with Thailand a distant second at 11-7. The Spanish earned their 14th division title and their second in four years. D6 was also lopsided with South Korea at 15-3, three better than both Burkina Faso and Egypt at 12-6. The Korans advanced for the 24th time and the fourth time in the last seven years.

Division 7 was competitive with Mexico and Bangladesh finishing tied at 14-4 and Madagascar at 13-5. The Mexicans had the tiebreaker as they defeated the Bangladeshis 6-5 and 4-3. This was Mexico’s 38th time advancing and the fourth of the last decade. Division 8 had Brazil (15-3) well ahead of Argentina (12-6) and the Netherlands (11-7). The Brazilians have earned 42 trips beyond divisional play, including three in the last four years and seven since 2031.



In Division 9, Italy and Austria tied at 14-4 with Peru at 12-6. The Italians win was 6-5, but the Austrian win was 6-4 to give Austria the differential tiebreaker by a run. Austria has only 11 division titles, but six have come in the last decade with four in the last five years. Russia rolled to 15-3 in Division 10 with Iraq second at 12-6. The Russians are on their own three year streak with seven berths in the last decade. Russia has advanced 23 times overall.

Ecuador earned the Division 11 crown at 15-3 ahead of Indonesia (13-5), Colombia (12-6), and Bulgaria (11-7). This was only their fifth division title, having last done it in 2034. Romania at 13-5 edged out the Philippines (12-7) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (11-7) in Division 12. They had split with the Filipinos, notably getting a 3-2 win in 16 innings in the opening contest. For the Romanians, this was their eighth trip to the playoffs and first since 2031.

A tight Division 13 had England (13-5) just ahead of both Kazakhstan (12-6) and Portugal (12-6). The English split their head-to-heads with both, notably needing 13 innings for their win against the Kazakhs. England moved forward for the 14th time and third time in a decade. France dominated Division 14 at 16-2 with last year’s third place team Haiti (12-6) next along with Armenia and Taiwan at 11-7. The French have 19 playoff berths and got their second in three years.

Australia took Division 15 at 14-4 ahead of the Gambia and Uzbekistan both at 11-7. The Aussies have 13 division titles, but are on an impressive five-year streak. Lastly, Germany (14-4) edged out defending world champ Vietnam (13-5) and Chile (12-6) in Division 16. The Germans grabbed their 19th playoff trip and second in three years.
