Cards news: July 24 -- SS Gustavo Melendez sent to Tampa Bay for IF Jai Brown
The St. Louis Cardinals have traded former All-Star shortstop Gustavo Melendez to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for 2B/3B Jai Brown.
Melendez, 27, has struggled this season hitting just .224 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 89 games/83 starts.
He also is in his contract season and when the team couldn't agree on an extension -- the team didn't meet his request based on this season's performance and his long injury history -- the decision was made to make a trade.
Melendez was an NL All-Star in 2034 and also won a Silver Slugger that year.
In 587 career games/559 starts, Melendez hit ..247 with 51 home runs and 254 RBIs.
The 26-year-old Brown has played in 78 games/73 starts for the Rays this season, during which he has hit .217 with three homers and six RBIs.
For his career, he is a .229 hitter with 26 homers ad 126 RBIs in 344 games/331 starts.
